Woodbury was originally founded in 1776 by Captain John Woodbury and his wife, Deborah. The town was named for the wooded area near where it was located. The first house in the town was built in 1777. In 1801, Woodbury joined the Township of Middlesex County.In 1814, Woodbury became a part of the newly formed Union County and removed to what is now Princeton Junction. In 1828, Union County merged with Burlington County to form New Jersey. In 1829, Woodbury became an incorporated township with a different name but with the same boundaries as before- it included parts of what is now Princeton Junction and other townships including Rahway and West Caldwell.In 1854, when Morrisania Township were created from portions of Union and Burlington Counties, Woodbury became its seat; however, due to population growth in Morristown over that period (Morristown annexing portions of neighboring townships), Morrisania disbanded in 1865 while Woodbury continued to grow at an alarming rate- by 1870, it had reached 1,500 people! By 1880 census figures, it had grown to 2,000 people! Despite this rapid growth (and some controversial decisions made during its brief existence), Woodbury never lost its rural character or sense of community The arrival of Interstate 95 in 1978 changed all that: within 15 years of becoming one of the last communities on NJ’s east coast – Woodsburys population exploded to more than 10K residents Today’s Marksburg Shopping Center overlooks much older neighborhoods such as Haddonfield and South Plainfield John Atherton bought land northeast of present day Marksburg Shopping Center for $8 per acre back in 1922 Atherton renamed his property “Marksburg” after his home town – which he saw as a way to remind people that their roots were here He also donated land adjacent to his property for use as a parkland which still remains today
The town of Woodbury was originally settled in 1766 by the Morris family. The town name comes from a Native American word meaning "haunted place." The first store in the town was built on Main Street in 1779. In 1818, woodbury became a part of Jersey City and the population rapidly grew. By 1869, there were over 200 businesses in the town. In 1888, the first school district was formed and Woodbury quickly became one of the most prosperous communities in Jersey City. However, during World War II, Woodbury suffered heavy damage from bombing raids. Consequently, many residents left the town and it slowly lost its population until it reached its current level of around 700 people today.
