Ammunition history in Woodbury, New Jersey began with the early powder and shot mills located in the town. These mills produced cast lead bullets for shotguns and handguns. The first rifle ammunition was also produced in Woodbury. This ordinance, dated November 9, 1792, prohibited any person from manufacturing or selling rifles without a license from the Provincial Legislature. The first rifle ammunition made in America was cast lead bullets for shotgun use. Cast Lead Bullets were used as projectiles to fire cannons on land and at sea because of their low weight and ability to travel great distances without breaking down. The Lowenthal Gun Company of Philadelphia manufactured these bullets between 1814 and 1830. After America's independence from Great Britain, there was a need for more reliable artillery munitions due to increased military activity across the continent. In 1795, Congress passed an act authorizing the production of small caliber cannonballs using a new type of explosive called grenadiers' shot (a percussion cap fuse filled with black powder) instead of old flintlock cartridges which had been used for centuries up until that time. In 1814, Lowenthal Gun Company introduced new cast lead rounds designed specifically for artillery use called “Buccaneer” rounds. Buccaneer round became very popular among Americans during the War of 1812 because they were much heavier than other types of ball ammunition available then and their destructive force was greater when fired off cannon balls reaching distances up to 100 statute miles (160 kilometers).

The first ammunition shop in Woodbury, NJ was opened in 1892 by J.W. Brodie and his brother-in-law, Jacob Schertz. The business was located on the northeast corner of Washington and Clinton Streets. Ammunition products were sold to local rifle clubs, muzzleloader clubs, artillery organizations, and other gun enthusiasts. Ammunition production resumed in 1907 when David Wiegand incorporated his company Wiegand & Sons Ammunition Manufacturing Company Ltd., which produced both paper cartridges and shot shells. In 1912 the company became known as Wiegand Ammo Corporation Ltd., selling rounds made from brass casee and copper plated steel cases. In 1916 Harry Kapp set up a munitions plant on Main Street in Woodbury with an inventory of 1 million rounds of ammunition. This marked the beginning of American Ammunition Corp.'s (AAC) long history as a leading ammo producer in New Jersey. AAC remained active until it merged with three other companies to form United States Powder Corporation (USP) in 1984.
Woodbury is a township in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,699 at the 2010 census. Woodbury is located on the border of Hunterdon and Morris counties. It is bordered by the city of Dumont to the east, Rahway to the west and Scranton to the northwest. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Woodbury were Frenchmen who built Fort Beausejour in 1686 as part of their efforts to stop English traders from traveling through Morris and Hunterdon Counties. The fort was abandoned in 1702 after British forces captured it during the War for Independence. In 1764, John Woolridge purchased land near present-day Woodbury from Sir William Howe for $10 per acre (the purchase included ). Woolridge named his new township after himself and made it a part of Hunterdon Township. In 1814, Woolridge donated all or part of his estate – including 4 blocks north of where present-day State Route 22 intersects with him Road – to form what became known as Parkwood Cemetery and School District No. 2 (today's Woodbury Township). At that time, only men could be buried there so Mrs. Woolridge laid her husband's body there together with many other pioneers during her lifetime. During World War II, about 6800 servicemen were buried at Parkwood Cemetery; most were artillery gunners who died in action on D-Day or later when their regiment moved inland into Normandy France; however some aircrew also were buried here during national campaigns such as "Pilgrims" and "Eagle" flights over Europe before landing at England’s Prestwick Airport which served as RAF Valleyfield until 1957 when that runway was closed due to suburban development within walking distance of the cemetery boundaries.. Some servicemen also are interred at two local military cemeteries - Camp Valor North American Air National Guard Base Cemetery (now called Arlington National Cemetery) just south of town limits off Interstate 95 exit 217A outside Allentown PA while Platoon Sergeant First Class George Fenton is interred there along side other USAAF personnel killed in action or missing in action during WWII plus those killed/missing fighting Japanese forces prior thereto Graveyard located adjacent to current day intersection I-95 & Rte 22 just south of town limits on right hand side Of this large open field lies today former barracks/ ammunition depot used by US Army troops occupation #5 Detachment thruout WW2 Ft Monmouth Borough NJ post 9/11 Field Unit 5th Infantry Division Veterans Memorial Museum

The name of the town came from an early settler's log cabin on the west side of the mountain range that stands today near Woodbury Lake. The community began as a small village named "Bamford" which was established by Nicholas Bamford in 1792. It later became known as "Woodbury." The first school in what is now Woodbury Township was opened in 1812 and it remained operational until 1859. In 1868, a new school was built and it remains operational to this day. In 1906, Soldiers' Home Road (later called Veterans Memorial Highway) was laid out through Woodbury township and it has served as both a Local Road and State Route ever since. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town had 8,569 residents at the 2000 census; however its population may have been higher because of all of its annexations during subsequent censuses. Woodbury was incorporated as a town on October 14, 1851, from portions of Rahway and Madison Heights. The first settler in what would become Woodbury was Augustus F. Wright who arrived on horseback in 1839. In 1863, the town became part of Clifton Township, based on the results of an election in which residents voted to split off from Rahway. The population of Woodbury peaked at 2,878 in 1920 and then declined to 1,711 by 1940. However, during World War II the population increased to 3,010 due to the influx of soldiers and their families. The postwar trend continued with a population increase to 4,563 by 1980. In 2007, Woodbury voters passed a referendum approving annexation into Burlington County.
