The first settler in what is now Woodbury was Nicholas Doherty who arrived on July 2, 1794. He and his family were the first to settle in what is now the town of Woodbury Township. Doherty had been born in Ireland and immigrated to America when he was just eighteen years old. He settled on a tract of land that included present day Woodbury Township and built a cabin there. In 1814 Nicholas Doherty's great-grandson John Doherty organized a group of men to purchase 1,000 acres of land east of what would become Woodbury Township from Jameson & Company for $1 per acre (this stretch became known as "Doherty's Corner"). By 1830, about 50 people lived in the villages located around present day East Brunswick and Northumberlandtown with only five dwellings being purchased or constructed more than once during this time period. On November 8, 1834, Anthony Wayne founded Wayne Manufacturing Company near where current-day East Brunswick stands with one hundred fifty dollars he had earned working as an apprentice printer at Newark’s Annandale printing shop. The company moved its operations two miles westward to a two story building which still stands today on Main Street in downtown East Brunswick (now home to Wawa). It was here that Wayne began making machine tools such as hammers and chisels using wood instead of iron orsteel because it was cheaper and easier to work with than metals. He also began producing cigars which led him into other manufacturing ventures over the years including boots (1862), hats (1868), saddles (1875), buttons (1880), candy bars (1910) and cigarettes (1915). This entrepreneurism eventually attracted competition from larger companies such as David Biddle & Sons who bought out Wayne Manufacturing Company in 1898 for $100,000 plus interests therein valued at $200,000 ($2 million today). At their peak Biddle Manufacturing produced products such as shoeshine machines/equipment; ovens/dishwashers; lighthouse lights; automobiles; radios; typewriters; telephones etc.. However by 1922 they had closed their doors for good citing difficulties within the industry due mainly to technology changes while they were unable effectively compete with major companies like Ford Motor Co., General Electric CO., Bethlehem Steel CO., Singer Sewing Machine CO., Armour Rubber Co.", GEICO INSURANCE COMPANY AND CHrysler Air Conditioning CO.. Among those leaving was founder Anthony Wayne who became an owner/operator of several small businesses before passing away in 1926 at age seventy-eight after thirty years business ownership.. His son Jay continued the father's legacy by becoming an executive vice president at Chrysler Corporation until his retirement in 1991 having held that position since 1980.. Jay Doherty passed away on October 6th 2002 after many long days serving Chrysler Motors Corporation during his career spanning forty years beginning when he joined them when they were part of Dodge Motorsports Incorporated back then called Peddle Truck Corp... Jay's wife Mary did most of all hands-on labor overseeing production while she took caretake her husband's health until he passed away four weeks later...
