Westwood is located in Camden County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 58,904. It is the most populous municipality in Camden County and its second-most populous municipality after Woodbridge Township. The borough's land was annexed by Camden in 1838 and by Westwood in 1907. The area now comprising Westwood was first settled by Dutch colonists during the early 17th century. In 1682, a group of English traders founded what would become Westwood on Long Island Sound. By 1718, however, all Dutch settlers had either left or been killed by the British in the Battle of Long Island (1681). In 1724, George Washington walked from Philadelphia to Morristown on horseback and called at Westwood on his way back home frombattle with Sir Charles Cornwallis. The first home built in what would become Westwood was a log cabin erected near present-day Winthrop Avenue and Race Street in 1728 by John Demarest; it burned down four years later but was soon replaced with a more permanent structure that still stands today: the Demarest House (built about 1730–35). A survey taken of northern Camden County in 1803 noted that there were no bounds to what could be developed within 0 1/2 mile of any road or stream; this statement remains accurate to this day as development has continued unabated throughout much of North Camden County since then. When William Penn arrived at Easton late one night aboard HMS "Burke" prior to founding Pennsylvania in 1681, he probably passed through South Brunswick before descending along Route 22 eastward to enter Camden County for the first time. This order served as inspiration for future developers like James Middletown who came up with plans for what are now portions of neighboring North Shore township west of University Park Drive while also developing other tracts east thereof including parts lying now within westbound I-95 ; these developments eventually became part Ofwington Beach , Little Egg Harbor Township ,Easton Borough currently known as West Wington village limits while parts lying within southbound I-95 continue unincorporated under certain name such as Middletown beachfront townships until they reach their current eastern terminus just northwest side Ofwington village limits next door Towington Beach open water park .) During World War II many homes were destroyed or damaged during bombing raids conducted over Jersey City and Atlantic City by American forces; many people who lost their homes subsequently moved into newly constructed housing estates built specifically for military personnel stationed therein such as White Sands Air Station outside Neptune City during World War II which continues today as housing barracks used primarily by UAF flying students .)
