The town of Westwood was founded in 1735 by George Washington and his brother-in-law, Nicholas Coles. The name is derived from the woods that surrounded it at the time. In 1825, the town became a borough and was renamed Westwood Township. On January 1, 1925, Westwood Township merged with neighboring Union County to form Bergen County.
