The name "Westwood" comes from an early French settler named Jean-Baptiste de Westwood who landed on what is now the border of Newark and Jersey City in 1664. In 1781, John Morrill built a home hereabouts on what would later become Morrill Park. What became known as Westwood Village began to form around this time with small homes constructed around a common green space near where Interstate 95 now exists. In 1892, when the rest of Middlesex County was split into two parts by the state line between New York and Pennsylvania, Westwood remained within the new Essex County until 1907 when it again became part of Middlesex after that county's merger with Union County. Prior to its current form as a town, it included all or portions of Elizabeth Township (northwest corner), Hackensack Township (southwest corner), Hamilton Township (southeast corner), Brick Township (southcentral corner), Caldwell Township (east central corner) and East Brunswick Township (northeast central corner). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 5,898 people residing in the town: 2% black or African American; 64% White; 6% Asian; 1% Native American; 0%Pacific Islander; 3% from other races; 11% from two or more races; and 14% Hispanic or Latinoof any race. Of those 10%, 8% identified themselves as Jews while 2% identify themselves as Catholics. As of 2010 there are still some residents who identify themselves as Jews although they have lost most if not all their commercial activity due to gentrification in Newark and Jersey City

Westwood, New Jersey is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. Westwood was formed from part of Rahway Township on November 3, 1912. It is located in the northeastern corner of Middlesex County and borders Newark to the north, Uniondale to the east, and Branchburg to the south. The first settler in what became Westwood was Major John Waddell who arrived in 1775 and claimed land along with Captain Andrew McKnight. In 1814-1815 Major Ezekiel Payne purchased 2 acres (0.8 km²) of land from Nicholas Girard for $2 per acre (1 hectare). A post office called Westwood was established at this location on December 10, 1814; it remained in operation until July 1, 1870. On December 3rd 1912 residents of Rahway Township voted to form a Borough when they met at Mennonite Church which had been built there earlier that year.(Merkle family photo) In 1922 during World War II most all businesses closed due to lack of war production quotas but three local stores managed by J C Reilly opened up – The Smith Pharmacy (now Dormer Pharmacy), The Woolen Millinery (later Ruppersberger Women’s Clothing Store), and The Radio Shack store right off Interstate 95 just past Exit 201A). The Borough Council Building also burned down on January 6th 1945 while borough officials were inside it but no one was injured.(The building now houses a small convenience store.) portal
