Westwood, NJ is a borough located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 21,724. The borough was formed on April 1, 1871 from portions of Rahway and East Brunswick Township. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Westwood were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1664. By 1795, there were three churches in town - all Congregationalist - and one Tavern on Park Street. The first school in town was opened in 1802 by Reverend John Fenton as a Day School for Boys at the corner of Park and Clinton Streets. In 1825-26, Westwood Academy was established as a Female Seminary with tuition paid by private individuals and also offered agricultural instruction under the direction of Mr. Prentice & Mrs. Prentice; it flourished until about 1830 when it became too expensive to maintain without state aid consequent upon an increase in population and economic development around Newark (then Riverhead) within boundaries of Westwood limits). Some semblance of order eventually returned though only slightly before becoming embroiled again largely due largely to increasing wealth disparity between those living here originallyNJers still residing mostly outside city limits while descendants/relatives/friends (or just somebody feeling nostalgic) have turned out increasingly numerous & influential locally (& nationally) since 1990s thru gentrification efforts spearheaded most notably (& thankfully) led by Mayor Jeff Klein who took office prior thereto pledging “to work collaboratively with our neighbors & engage everyone we interact with both inside & outsideof City Hall” continuing this ethos albeit sometimes mooted more generally online (#westwoodism?) kinda thing but pretty nonetheless given current day trends != Governor Phil Murphy’s administration either overtly supportive OR even claiming any knowledge thereof despite previously stating he would closely review local issues pendingGovernor Murphy’s decision making process), much has changed especially for residents hereabouts over time whether you realize it or not tho admittedly even more changes are currently taking place e.g., suburbanites moving closer = greater need for ample public transportation options nearby thereby exacerbating parking shortages; high school students increasingly commuting further rather than attending traditional schools downtown ->increasingLY fewer jobs available downtown=leadererJeff Klein responded pre2010 NYC mayoral campaign saying “It doesn't help if they're coming down your street because suddenly you have no job…. [I]t makes no sense whatsoever if they can walk 15 minutes away from our school and find something better paying than what you're getting right now” yet somehow things haven't quite gotten better despite Councilwoman Diane Savino testifying last week her constituents feel left out (= powerless)?). heck look at recent polling numbers too… Despite assertions otherwise housing prices continueIncrease based mainly on lack thereof affordable comparables nearby notwithstanding much media attention generated via recent endeavors like #westwoodism? Westwood is growing fast becoming one of my favorite places!

Westwood was founded by General James Wood on November 3, 1814 as Westville Township. It took its name from its location west of Newark Avenue and east of the Raritan River. The first settler in what is now Westwood was Major John White who arrived in 1795 and claimed land along the Delaware River as part of what is now East Brunswick Township. On July 8, 1814, General James Wood granted 1/3rd of his estate (now known as parts of Essex and Gloucester townships) to Colonel Lewis Morris for $1,000 cash which he deposited with George Washington at Mount Vernon Estate on April 26th complete with rights to hunting and fishing within said Manor including all riverine strips bordering upon it - this included present day East Windsor Borough. This donation constituted the nucleus around which future development occurred in what would become Westwood In 1816 Captain Ebenezer Coffin became one of seven men appointed by President Thomas Jefferson to survey a route for an early railroad through Sussex county - their report became known as Coffin's Report and approved by then Governor Nicholas Biddle on February 14th 1800; this made possible the opening of the first stagecoach line between Philadelphia and Trenton in 1818 It wasn't until 1830 when settlers started arriving in large numbers that township boundaries were established On December 11th 1830 Samuel Purdy purchased 320 acres northwest ofpresent dayEast Windsor borough from Captains Harry Geiger & Geo Wittman for $2,500 cash plus 5% interest payable annually . This purchase formed eastern border for present day Westwood . In 1835 Purdy donated another 160 acres extending northeast into Rutgers University lands acquisitions during separate land grants given to Rutgers trustees Aaron Burr & Jeremiah Davenport on October 10th 1834 This new gift extended westward from today's south side intersection of Princeton Avenue (westbound lanes) / Route 9 south to today's east side intersection with Route 206 north/west (eastbound lanes). This parcel became known as "Purdy Park" after Samuel Purdy himself In 1840 David Levy bought 640 acres adjacent to present day Middlebury Township from Captain Amos Browning for $5,000 cash + 10% interest payable annually . This acquisition formed eastern border for present day South Orangeburg Township David Levy also donated 100 acres extending northwest into Northumberland County lands acquisitions during separate land grants given to Sir John Moore & Lord Ashington on October 10th 1840 This new gift extended westward from today's north side intersection with Princeton Avenue (southbound lanes) / Route 9 north to today's east side intersection with Route 206 south/west (northbound lanes). This parcel became known as "Levy Park" after David Levy himself
