Westwood, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,813 at the 2010 census. Westwood is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Westwood was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. A group of Dutchmen and Native Americans from Long Island founded the village of Newtown on Nov. 14, 1664. On July 1, 1790, Westwood became a town when it merged with neighboring Northfield Township to form a single municipality under the jurisdiction of the Board of Chosen Freeholders (later known as Township Council). In 1847 an act were passed giving township residents "the right to vote by ticket" in municipal elections; this gave impetus for early political representation and made Westwood one of the most politically active towns in New Jersey. In 1924-1925 local leaders convened an industrial conference at which they formulated plans for making their community into a world center for electric power production and storage by creating two large hydroelectric dams – Easton Dam and South Orange Lake Dam – thereby creating what would become one of New Jersey's largest economic sectors. In 1951-1952 Mayor Harry Siever initiated work on renovating and expanding Interstate 95 through his then-new city hall complex on Park Avenue just east of Center Street (now Broadwalk Avenue) while also developing major new projects such as new elementary schools and high school expansions; these initiatives helped contribute to WESTWOOD'S position as one of NJ's most vibrant communities today. The first settlers to live in what is now Westwood were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1664. They named their new village "Westvleteren" after a place near Amsterdam. The area which now makes up Westwood was originally part of Newark Township. In 1834, the township was created from parts of Trenton and East Brunswick Township. On July 1, 1872, portions of East Brunswick and Newark were added to Westwood as well; this made it a borough. On December 17, 1924, the name changed again to Westwood when all portions of Middlesex County were merged into one county under the new system of government known as "New Jersey". As part of this changeover process, some streets within Borough borders also changed names - for example: Newton Avenue became Livingston Avenue while Stillman Street became Grove Avenue - but most residents continued to call their neighborhoods by their original names throughout this period. In 1960s and 1970s there was much research being done on genetic studies that would later be used for Human Genome Research (HGR). This research would take place at various locations such as Princeton University’s Broad Institute and Columbia University’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center before finally settling down at Mount Sinai Medical School in New York City where they conducted their experiments until 2003 when they moved back to Princeton due to lack of space there on Mount Sinai's campus.
