Westwood is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,853 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Raritan River east of Long Branch. The area that would become Westwood was first settled by Dutch families who arrived during the early 1600s. In 1764, John Hughes and his family purchased 1,000 acres (40 hectares) of land along the Raritan River from George Washington and founded Westwood on this land. The village originally consisted of only two homes; today there are over eighty-five residences in all. In 1814, General James Kildare set out from Morristown with 5 company commanders to explore what lay beyond the Monmouthshire line into Bucks County. He reached Westwood on October 12 and ordered his men to encamp there for supplies and Headquarters until he could return home. On November 25th, Kildare's forces discovered a possible route down the Delaware River which would link Philadelphia with Atlantic City via Newark – an event which would lead to more than one hundred thousand people traveling through Westwood each year by way of the river between 1540 and 1800 alone! Today much of what made up South Amboy Township–west of where today's Borough of Westwood sits–came together when that township was split off from Amboy Township in 1872 due to increasing population density within Amboy Township north of Interstate 95/Upper Manhattan Avenue (the so-called “Amsterdam Curve”). That part of town continued to be called South Amboy as late as 1950 when it was merged into Borough Park following a referendum vote by residents! Since then some key aspects have changed such as incorporation as a borough in 1966; annexation by East Brunswick in 1984; fire protection district status granted in 2006 which has led to increased development around Borough Park while also maintaining its character as an historic town center setting back upon fields bordered by Prospect Park and Lake New York Wilderness Preserve
Westwood was a small borough in the Borough of Teaneck, New Jersey, United States. It was located on the west side of Westwood Manor and northeast of Paramus. The population was 1,852 at the 2000 census. The first settler in what is now Westwood Township was Nicholas Weinstock who arrived in 1798 from England. He and his family built a cabin on the southwestern corner of present-day Park Avenue and Ridge Road. There were no permanent residents until 1815 when Captain John Fenton established himself as a trader on Long Island Sound with his ship "Pine Orchard". In 1816 he founded Fentonville (now Parsippany) with land that he purchased from Nicholas Weinstock. In 1824, James Purdy bought 2,000 acres of land east of where Westwood now stands from Nicholas Weinstock for $10 per acre. Purdy designated this land as Township 4 Northward. This township would later become part of Monmouth County when it was formed on April 14, 1923 from portions of Middlesex County. The first post office in Westwood Township was opened in 1827 by Michael O'Neill with the name "Newburgh." It changed its name to "Westwood" in 1837 after Samuel Westwood donated an acreage for a post office near Princeton Junction which had been established two years earlier by Captains Cornelius Vanderbilt and William Randolph Hearst Jr.. In 1840, John Fenton erected a log cabin on what is now Park Avenue just east of Ridge Road to provide housing for workers hired to erect his new mine at Easton Mines nearby. The town began daytrips between Easton Mines and Princeton Junction starting around 1850 using horse-drawn wagons pulled by men or dogsleds over snow drifts along today's Route 9W from Park Ave.(now Ridge Rd.) all the way down to Princeton Junction where passengers disembarked and took local trains back up to Easton Mines or continued their journey south along current Route 9W all the way back into Trenton before getting off at Southwick Streetcar Terminal where they boarded waiting trolley cars returning home across Lake Hudson or continuing their trip north via Interstate 90 towards Newark Airport or vice versa - one stop every day! Today most people only remember one such stop: Northwick Streetcar Terminal! Today there are few remnants remaining from those early days including one small building still standing next to Mr.O'Neill's original Post Office which once served as Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Catholic Church - second oldest church still standing in America outside New York City!
