Westwood is a town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 24,745 at the 2010 census. Westwood is located on the border of Cape May and Atlantic counties. The first settlers in what is now Westwood were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1609. They named the area "Westervelt".[1] In 1714, they founded another settlement called "New Amstel". With the British Invasion of America during the Revolutionary War, many Dutch colonists were forced to flee their homes and join British forces. Those who remained behind became refugees and slowly assimilated into English culture. By 1800, all but a few of these settlers had left for other parts of North America or Europe. The last Dutch settler in Westwood died in 1824. Most of what is now Westwood was granted to township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 14, 1782.[2][3] The township was formed from portions of two other townships: East Brunswick Township (now Parsippany) and South Brunswick Township (now Monmouth). On November 3rd, 1834,[4] it received a charter from Governor James Ketchum as part of a statewide program to promote Dorchester County growth and development. At that time it had a population of 486 people;[5][6] its current population reaches 24,745 as of the 2010 Census. In 1847/48,[7][8] there was an interesting event when three men – John Gorman (from Parsippany), George Haggerty (& wife Sarah), & Michael O’Malley – traveled from Hackensack via Trenton to settle near Swedesboro Creek on Park Avenue south side Newark where they erected some stores & began farming with oxen which provided power for their looms until about 1850 when steamboats took over this service[9]. Some more interesting events occurred during this period including: August 21st 1849 when Alfred Pemberton purchased land northwest corner Main Street and Ferry Road east side Trust Village from Nicholas Gotha for $610; October 12th 1850 when Elijah Hutchinson bought also land northeast corner Main Street and Ferry Road east side Trust Village for $710; January 25th 1851 when Amos Dolan established Bryn Mawr Maternity Hospital west side Fishtown Line Railroad tracks adjacent property line between Main Street & Ferry Road north sideTrust Village ownership transferred December 2nd 1861 after failure by Morris Brown to purchase tract adjoining lands conveyed by his father-in-law Isaac Nourse since he did not have enough money available; February 15th 1865 after John Waddell discovered coal reserves on section line between Farmington Hills Borough NJ & Bridgewater Township NJ near present day intersection Of Broadwalk Boulevard And Route 78 - naming this property “Westwood Coal Field” effective March 1st 1865 - making it one of oldest continuously operated coal fields in North America!

Westwood is named for John Wesley West (1785-1846), an American Methodist preacher and founder of the Methodist Church in America. The first settlers in what would become Westwood were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1688. A millrace ran through the town and water was available only during certain times of year. By 1799, there were twelve families living in Westwood and four churches were serving residents: one Congregational (founded 1798), one Presbyterian (founded 1801), and one Baptist (founded 1827). In 1825, John Cohan built a house on what is now First Street near Third Avenue and organized the community into wards based on religious affiliation. From this point forward until 1912, each ward had its own mayor with veto power over all local government decisions made by the municipality as a whole. In 1912, whenNJ Transit began providing passenger transportation within the region it encountered opposition from landowners who wanted their land used for industrial purposes instead of providing transit service that could bring workers to their businesses. Mayor Alfred Ely requested state assistance to build a new line connecting Newark Liberty International Airport with Trenton via Essex County but NJ Transit refused because they believed that such a line would provide more opportunities for business development within their territory than would be available carrying passengers between Newark and Trenton directly. In 1916 Governor Woodrow Wilson convened an interstate conference at Princeton University where he proposed creating a national network of expressways leading from east to west so that commerce could be transported efficiently across country without having to go through states like Pennsylvania which clogged up corridors like Route 66. In response to this proposal, NJ Transit announced its intentions to build a new route connecting Newark with Trenton via Essex County but again NJ Transit refused because they felt that building such an expensive addition to their network would compete against Interstate 95 which was then under construction between Philadelphia and New York City.]] This event became known as "the Great East-West Transport Rivalry" because it helped spur development around both cities while also highlighting differences between Northeast Corridor development plans of those days compared to today's roadbuilding industry.]] In 1917NJ Transit completed construction of its current system consisting of three lines—the North Jersey Coast Line (NJCL), the Main Line(ML), and the Lincoln Tunnel—all running northeastward from Atlantic City along Interstate 95 towards points north including Paterson, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Buffalo Niagara Falls etcetera.)]]. The first customer services call came into NJ TRANSIT service on July 1st 1945 from Rahway Station located adjacent to Quaker Bridge Road][]. On December 3rd 1948 Delaware Railway Corporation delivered equipment necessary for reactivating US 23 southbound from Summit Avenue northbound following damage caused by Hurricane Floyd.[]]], This led to increased traffic congestion on I-95 as people traveled back home after Christmas[][][]]. After years of planning by both NJ TRANSIT operators and state officials,[][], commuter rail service became available throughout most portions of New Jersey starting on April 12th 1976 when Penn Central Railroad introduced itsPATH system between Randwick Terminal in South Plainfield[][][],[], subsequently expanding into Hoboken Terminal concurrent with PATH's opening across Elizabethtown Township [])]]].
