The borough covers an area of and had a total population of 24,793 as of the 2000 census. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.13. Westwood was a small town in New Jersey, United States, until the early 21st century. The population of Westwood peaked at 10,000 in the1960s. It has since shrunk to less than 1,000 residents. The first European settlers in what is now Westwood were Dutch Protestants who arrived in 1664. They founded a small village on what is now the border of Middlesex and Union counties. In 1795, the Township of Westwood was organized from parts of Sussex and Monmouth townships. By 1800, it had a population of 3200 people and was one of the most prosperous communities in New Jersey. However, by 1814-1815, according to one source, "the increasing number and spread of Indian hostilities" caused manufacturing businesses such as tannery owners to leave for neighboring states with cheaper labor prices. A second wave of immigrants began arriving after World War II: Germans (1945-1949), Italians (1951-1964), Poles (1965-1979), Irish (1980-1985), Mexicans (1986-1993) and East Europeans refugees fleeing communism or civil war in their native countries - many escaping famine while others were seeking refuge from persecution by non-Muslim majorities back home. In 1965 local officials approved plans to build an expressway through what is today Westwood; this became known as I-495 or simply "The Freeway". The development created numerous jobs for locals but also raised property values within the community which contributed to its decline over time; by 2000 only about 500 people lived there permanently and about 100 rented properties out from under $1 million each . It wasn't until 2007 that the township decided it wanted to make some changes to its history curriculum which would focus on more positive aspects including heroism during World War II (a topic not currently covered in school curriculums) as well as more recent events such as 9/11 attacks . However due to financial hardships faced by many residents following 9/11 those changes never took place however they have been mentioned indirectly throughout various reports about Westwood's decline over time
