Westwood was originally a small, rural community located in Monmouth County, New Jersey. The area now known as Westwood was first settled by German and Dutch farmers in the early 18th century. In 1838, an act were passed annexing portions of Middlesex County to form new township forms in order to increase the number of township residents. The annexation created a second town called Westwood within its borders. In 1843, an act were passed annexing portions of Essex County to create a third township form called Westwood again within its borders. In 1920, the last section of present-day Monmouth County (except for parts of Elizabethtown and Avalon) became part of New Jersey when it was merged into the state as a result of the United States Census Bureau's redistribution plan following World War I. After years of decline and neglect, much effort has gone into restoring and revitalizing Westwood over the past several decades through various public and private initiatives - including developing a citywide park system; creating new businesses and residences; initiating citizen-led planning efforts that have led to innovations in both housing and transportation; funding local infrastructure projects with proceeds from development fees levied on properties surrounding monolithic shopping centers near Interstate 95/I-95 Parkway;and maintaining close relationships with neighboring communities through civic engagement opportunities such as hosting street festivals or staged village events at East Brunswick High School or Philipsburg Borough Park
