Westwood is a borough in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,959 at the 2010 census. Westwood is located on the eastern edge of Atlantic City and bordered by Burlington Township to the north, Oceanport to the east, and Monmouth Junction to the south. The town of Westwood was first settled in 1824 as part of Bergen County. In 1836, it was transferred to Atlantic County and renamed Westwood. On November 2nd of that year, a fire destroyed most of what remains of Bergen County's courthouse in Westwood. In 1882, control of Westwood passed from Bergen County to Atlantic City through an Agreement between both counties where each would appoint a representative to run for office within their respective county limits. The Borough of West Wood served as its own elections board until 1984 when it became part of the Borough of Atlantic City through an agreement between the two municipalities which lasted until September 9th 2016 when it again reverted back to Bergen County control through an agreement between both municipalities which has yet to be ratified by voters. As per Municipal Corporation Law section 7-1 et seq., all taxes levied by or payable unto township corporations are collected and paid into said corporation coffers without apportionment amongindividual taxpayers within said township corporations; provided however that any money not so collected or paid into said corporation coffers shall become immediately available for spending by said corporation either directly or indirectly upon such lawful purposes as may be prescribed therein by ordinance passed bysaid municipality with respect thereto;provided further that no increase in sales tax rates shall take place during any fiscal year hereafter unless approved by a referendum conducted pursuantto law enactedbysaid municipality . . .

Westwood is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia–Camden–Wilmington, PA-NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Westwood were Dutch settlers in 1664. A grant from the Crown was given to John Pemberton and his brother Nicholas in 1681 for "all that part of Southwark Township within this Province lying eastward of Freehold Line." In 1714, Colonel George Washington founded Westwood on land granted him by the Crown for his military academy at Valley Forge near present-day Easton. In 1814, President James K. Polk issued an executive order creating a board of commissioners to manage all public lands in Pennsylvania including 3 square miles (7 km2) of land grants totaling . These grants were made as part of a larger program to open up Pennsylvania to settlement by American citizens. The order also called for the sale of these lands at low prices to "the best and most worthy people who may offer themselves". The proceeds were used to finance construction costs associated with building President Polk's presidential mansion on Pennsauken Avenue in Philadelphia and other infrastructure projects throughout Pennsylvania. In addition to its role as a stop on the Underground Railroad, Westwood had another important function during the early years of America: it served as a hub for trading with Europe and Asia due primarily to its location just outside Philadelphia's harbor boundaries and its close proximity to several large European shipping fleets based in Atlantic City or New York City
Westwood was originally a hamlet on the west side of Jersey City. It became a borough in 1900, and was incorporated as a city in 1912.
