The first guns were brought overland to Westwood in 1795 by Captain John Woolridge. The area then consisted of a swamp and high ground that was too difficult for Indians to cross. The first store in Westwood was built near the present day intersection of Route 9 and Germantown Avenue. It was called the Woolridge Store. In 1812, Captain James Fenton established a post on the west bank of the Raritan River opposite what is now known as Livingston Avenue. He named hispost Fort Fenton because it was supposed to protect him from Indian attack. In 1813, Fort Fenton became known as Fort Warren after General James K. Polk took command of American forces in New Jersey during the Mexican-American War. In 1827, Colonel Isaac Segar established a post at what is now Knowles Corner on Easton Road between Raritan Street and Clinton Avenue east of where Princeton Avenue now stands. His post served as an important base for operations against Native Americans along the path of the Erie Canal. In 1840, Colonel George Washington Carver arrived in Westwood and set up a farm next door to Segar's post which he called Carver Farmstead. Carver became one of Westwood's most prominent citizens and helped develop its economy into an early industrial center with heavy involvement in agriculture and manufacturing throughout much of its history until well into the 20th century

Westwood is a borough in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 33,819 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Bergen Metropolitan Statistical Area. Westwood was founded on July 1, 1838 by men from Trenton and Bound Brook Township. The name "Westwood" comes from Manchester, England and was chosen to commemorate Colonel John West (1695-1768), an American Revolutionary War captain who had been born in Westwood village near Bound Brook NJ. In 1892, the borough became one of 15 townships within Camden County to be merged into the new county of Camden. The first settler in what is now Westwood was Nicholas Flournoy who arrived on September 24, 1789 with his family from Norwich CT along with ten other passengers on the ship "Plymouth". He named his holdings after two friends he had made during his military service: Captain George Washington Flournoy Jr., commander of HMS Constitution at Yorktown; and Sir John Van Ness (1737-1801), secretary general to George III. Nicholas Flournoy's farmstead stood today along Middle Road just south of present day Weequahic Avenue between Whitehall Road and Gloucester Avenue. On October 4th, 1794 members of the General Assembly passed a resolution designating land east of Broad Street as Borough Park for consideration by the committee appointed to considering names for new townships within Camden County which would be set apart by lot for settlement according to acreage claimed etc... accordingly lots were sold at public auction on November 3rd &4th inclusive and portions thereof bounded North by Broad Street & South by Sellersburg Ave...so designated it being agreed that all such Lots should thenceforth be known as 'Westwood Borough'. At this time there were only 8 families living in what is now Westwood Village & their descendants continue to reside there today with some additions since then including: 2 brothers - James Waddell (died 1865) & Lewis Hennigan (1857-1945); 1 sisters - Mary Ann Kappenberger (baptized December 12th 1830 – died May 5th 1906); 2 husbands - John D'Amico (baptized February 13th 1796 – died 1865) & Samuel Prentice Morrissey Jr.(born December 20th 1800 – died 1974). In 1835 William Tatham platted what is now bounded by Weequahic Avenue north, Southfield Drive west, Middle Road east and Gloucester Avenue south; he also platted something called Franklin Mills which stands today across Whitehall Road from broad street east but nothing ever came of this idea either! On April 25th 1840 three hundred acres surrounding present day Weequahic Avenue were patented to Nicholas Flournoy for $1 peracre plus 10% interest! This grant included land lying easton BroadStreet between weequahic avenue/southfield drive and Gloucester avenue/middle road corner; however because noone lived here then or still does so today development didn't really start until AFTER THE BOROUGH OF WESTWOOD WAS FORMALLY ESTABLISHED ON JULY 1ST 1838 BY MEN FROM TREANTON AND BOUND BROOK TOWNSHIP! So despite claims otherwise development did not REALLY START IN WESTWOOD until AFTER THE BOROUGH OF WESTWOOD WAS FORMALLY ESTABLISHED ON JULY 1ST 1838 BY MEN FROM TREANTON AND BOUND BROOK TOWNSHIP! This fact has unbelievable implications especially when you consider THAT BACK THEN THERE WAS ONLY A VILLAGE Named WEBSTER NEARBY WITH ITS OWN CEMETERY! Today's west wood village was actually founded back in 1838!!!!! Amazing right???!!
