Westwood is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the borough had a population of 24,898. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough had a total area of , of which is land and (0.5%) is water. The first Europeans to visit what is now Westwood were Dutch traders in 1614 when they discovered salt pans on the Hackensack River. The first settler was Nicholas Hardenbergh who arrived in 1684 and built a house on Park Avenue. In 1701, John Strachey arrived with his brother-in-law Peter Minuit and founded Strachey's Ferry across the Hackensack River from what is now Westwood Elementary School. In 1834, Morris Heinrichs donated land to build an academy that would teach children reading and writing as well as mathematics and science. Classes began in 1835 and enrollment grew to over 150 students by 1840. In 1865, part of what is now Edison Township was annexed into Westwood while Westwood continued to Functions as its own Borough until 1901 when it became part of Middlesex County under New Jersey Statehood including Edison Township which then became part of Union City In 1951, parts of Edison Township were annexed into Westwood while Westwood continued to Functions as its own Borough until 2001 when it became part of Middlesex County under New Jersey Statehood including Edison Township which then became part of Union City The original commercial district that surrounded present day Edison Avenue originated around 1800 when two brothers named Samuel Fenton Developed their business around this junction selling goods such as flour, butter and cheese from horse drawn wagons hauled by their animals along Market Street near Rutgers University at Newark . They also sold pickles from cucumbers grown on their farm east side . By 1825 there were eight stores along current day Arcade Street near NJ Transit’s old Essex Station - one for each ward - together making it one of the most active commercial districts in town today . A second phase developed during this time with several hundred residences being erected between 1830-1860 primarily for merchants who did not wish to move their businesses out into open country where production difficulties existed like roadside ditches filled with waterlogged earth that inhibited transportation access ; these residences are still extant today dotting Essex Drive – largely unchanged since their construction

The name "Westwood" was chosen because it is one mile west of some woods near what is now Edison Avenue. In 1824-25, three teams from Newark played a wooden game called "Penny Arcade." The team that won the most games (a total of $10) received a penny each for their efforts. This type of game continued to be played until 1860 when it was replaced by poker tournaments at local saloons called Pocket Ball Grounds which later evolved into modern day casinos/restaurants named after prominent residents or events in their lives such as baseball Hall Of Fame inductees Tony La Russa and Lou Gehrig
Westwood was a small town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. It is located on the west side of Westwood Avenue between Paramus and Middlesex Avenues. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. The first settlers in what is now Westwood were English colonists who arrived in 1664. They named their community after the wooded area to the east of it called "Worth" or "Worth Valley". In 1824, when Monmouth County was formed from part of New Jersey, Westwood became one of its five towns. In 1892, a large sawmill and grist mill were erected atWestwood by J.H. Kapp & Son Company. These mills processed agricultural products such as flour and feed for livestock until they closed in 1982. In 1922, the first post office opened in Westwood with Wm Fenton as its first mail carrier; it continued service until 1978. The last post office closed on December 31, 1984.
