Westwood is a village in Orangetown Township, Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,980 at the 2010 census. The name "Westwood" originated from two grants of land to John West by the Crown in 1777 and 1778. The present spelling is first found on a deed dated November 10, 1802 from Nicholas Morison to George Washington and others. It is said that John West's great-grandson Isaac founded the town of Westwood on his farm near what is now Mount Holly in 1824. In 1830, Israel Morse moved his family there from Easton and began developing part of what would become the Village of Westwood. By 1840, about one hundred people lived in Westwood proper with twenty-seven dwellings; it had grown considerably but remained rural until after World War II when industry began moving into the area and suburban development took hold. In 1949, when Morris County was created from parts of Middlesex and Monmouth counties, Westwood became part of its boundaries. Prior to this time it had been a part of Union Township which was divided between those counties as well as Camden County. In 1976, portions of Monroe Township were annexed into westward expansion by Morris County while eastward annexation continued uneventfully through 2002 within existing Ridgewood Township (now North Arlington). Today's village straddles both sides of Route 1 just east of Interstate 95; according to 2010 Census data it has a total population including Ridgewoods residents who are counted separately as part of North Arlington (population 14,992). It surrounds an older industrial park surrounded by residential neighborhoods that have seen significant construction over the last few decades - much like many other villages located along major transportation corridors across America - but remain largely self-contained despite their appearance outside traditional urban areas where rapid economic growth has led to increased exposure for residents and businesses alike . Westwood, New Jersey is a small town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The population was 3,564 at the 2010 census. Westwood is home to the Kirtland Air Force Base and is also the location of Monmouth College. The first permanent settlers in what is now Westwood were two families who came from Bordentown, NJ in 1736. At the time, it was part of Union County. In 1814, a group of men from Newark arrived and began to farm the land around present day Westwood Drive and Cross Roads. By 1830-1831 some residents had built homes on what are today Cross Roads Road and Park Avenue. In 1832, an act was passed by Congress that named new townships in Middlesex County - including Westwood - based on boundaries set forth in that year's Revised Statutes. The township would be composed of two parts: one near Easton (west of present day Route 202) and another east of those boundaries near Mount Olivet (east of Route 9). The township was formed on April 15th, 1833 with a total population of 1,812 people. It would grow quickly; by 1850 it had reached 5,711 people! The area now encompassing present day Westwood existed as North Township until 1938 when it became part of South Middlesex Borough; which then became part of Monmouth County in 1966 when all municipalities within Monmouthshire were consolidated into one county government under the name “Monmouthshire”
