Westwood is a borough in Camden County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough had a population of 24,898. The area now comprising Westwood was part of Hunterdon Township until 1838 and then Union Township until 1878. It was named for George Westwood, an early resident and founder of what is now Camden. The first Europeans to visit the area were Dutch settlers in 1624 who found land on the west side of Hackensack River. In 1638, English colonists founded Westwood on land that they purchased from the Lenape Native Americans for $2 per acre (0.68 pounds). The name "Westwood" may come from a desire by some settlers to avoid being called "East Wood." In 1794, when New Jersey became a state, portions of Hunterdon and Uniontown were placed within Camden County as part of its initialordinance. However, most of what is now Westwood was still east of the Hackensack River at this time and so it remained part of Union Township until 1878 when it was annexed by Camden County as part of its official creation as a municipality. In 1830, John Dickinson erected an ironworks in Mechanicville which soon became one of the largest in America due to its production of heavy artillery ammunition for military campaigns throughout North America during the American Revolution. Unfortunately for Dickinson & Co., demand dried up after General Washington's surrender at Yorktown in 1781; production ceased altogether around 1800s because technology changed so much since then! At various points over time: -1838 - When Hunterdon Township was established it included all present-day Westwood except for parts on the north side including Mechanicsville which formed partof Uniontown after 1878 -1875 - When Union Township became county government it included all present day Westwood with only Mechanicsville remaining unincorporated -1900 - When Camden County was created it included all present day Westwood plus parts on both sidesofthe Hackensack River

Westwood was a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The town was founded by English colonists in 1764 and named for Sir John Westwood, 1st Baronet. Westwood grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its proximity to Philadelphia and its natural resources such as coal and iron ore. The population of Westwood peaked at around 9,000 in 1881 but declined thereafter. A large textile manufacturing industry developed in Westwood during the early 20th century. After World War II, however, the industry declined and the town turned to residential development. Today, Westwood is a small rural community with a few commercial buildings.
The area now known as Westwood was originally part of the Township of Perth Amboy. The township was organized on April 15, 1834. On November 1, 1912, Westwood became a borough. On May 1, 1966, it became a city.
