Westwood is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 24,898 at the 2010 census. Westwood is located on the border of Middlesex and Essex counties and straddles the North River. It is northwest of Newark and southeast of Princeton. The first Europeans to visit what is now Westwood were Dutch traders travelling along the river in 1609-1610. In 1686, Nicholas Bock founded a small town in present day Westwood on his farm called "Bock's Hope". The name originated from Bock's hope being an abandoned farmstead near where he later built his own home complex today. In 1814, Anthony Wayne built a sawmill on the south side of the North River in what is now South Hackensack Township while living at Bayonne Manor which also served as his headquarters during this time. On November 12th of that year, he opened the mill for business with twelve horses power driving two water wheels which made it one of New Jersey's first successful mill operations. In 1827, John Dickinson (the future 9th U.S. President) purchased 1/4 interest in Anthony Wayne's mill and became its president & manager until 1868 when he sold all interests to George Washington Dormer who ran it as a family business until 1893 when it passed through several hands before becoming fully automated by Eastman Kodak Company in 1923 – making it one of only two fully automated mills remaining in New Jersey after World War II! In 1951, Kodak merged with American Telephone and Telegraph to form AT&T Corporation;Westwood remained an independent company through its merger into AT&T! In 2003–2004, Verizon Communications acquired AT&T Corp., resulting in Verizon Wireless serving as both customer service provider for customers using Westwood Village Mall (now Edward J Fenton Jr.) until 2011 when that structure was transferred to Camden County government control! As part of that transaction, wireless services will be extended throughout all but three blocks within Verizon Wireless' current corporate boundaries including those lying within Borough limits! Westwood, New Jersey is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 25,752 at the 2010 census. Westwood was first settled in 1784 by English and Dutch colonists. It became a township in 1824 and a borough in 1881. The first settler to arrive in what would become Westwood was Captain John Woolley of Portsmouth who landed on October 22, 1784 with his family on the east side of Monmouth Creek. Captain Woolley's son James also arrived that day but died soon after disembarking from the boat. James' widow may have named her late husband's Landing place for him as there are many places called Woolley Cove and related waterways throughout Sussex County today. In 1785, another group of English and Dutch colonists consisting of 30 individuals set out from Weehawken Township under the leadership of Peter Minnis to found a new community known as "New Rochelle". This group had great difficulty finding suitable land so they decided to erect their own crude cabin before finally reaching their destination on November 15th where they erected a small tree-house which still stands today within what would eventually become Westwood Township boundaries (present day North Brunswick). On December 3rd, 1785 Pieter de Valkt( pronounced vahk-tuh) came ashore some distance upstream from where Wappingers Falls now stand with his family to purchase some supplies for his new settlement which he christened "Rochelle". This name is likely derived from Robert Noël's plan to build an Episcopal church (later Christ Church) at this location back in 1672 although no such church actually exists today within present day Rochelle Borough limits despite numerous attempts by historians over the years! A few days later on December 5th, De Valkt sent two men upriver towards Wappingers Falls with orders to purchase goods needed for his colony including candles, axes and other items necessary for building. Unfortunately one man returned empty handed having traveled too far down riverbed only to be met by envious settlers who derided him as being foolish enough not to have brought anything back! In retaliation one or moreThese men began construction of their own crude cabin downstream from where De Valkt had landed just north of present day Maple Avenue - later becoming known as "Wapinger's Falls" - this structure still remains standing today within present day North Brunswick Borough limits despite numerous attempts by historians over the years! Consequently it is generally accepted that this initial development along Monmouth Creek was actually prompted by Pieter de Valkt himself rather than anymanded instructions directly from above! The original village located near current day Rochelle Boulevard between Waxman Street & Broadwalk Avenue ultimately failed due largely because its founders lacked both social courage or political clout either early on or during the tumultuous early days following America's Revolutionary War victoryDocuments dating back to circa 1800 show various businessmen/politicians remarking upon how much easier life would be if all English speaking Protestants could just move westward into newly formed Pennsylvania settlements instead thereof thereby fulfilling an actualMap drawn up approximately 2 decades prior depicting areas currently layin
