Westwood, New Jersey is a small town located in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Westwood is one of the oldest villages in New Jersey and its first settler was Nicholas Westwood who purchased land from the Lenape Indians in 1682. In 1814, General George Washington visited Westwood and ordered Captain John Stevens to destroy all Indian villages within 10 miles of Newark without giving any warning to the inhabitants. The village flourished for many years until a large fire destroyed much of central business district in 1844. After that fire, businesses moved away from central business district and began to build on smaller streets around the original square which still stands today. In addition to its square tower, other famous landmarks include: The Easton School (now known as Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School), Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church which was built in 1793 and now serves as an important cultural center for area residents; The Old Westbury Golf Course which opened in 1922; and finally The First Methodist Episcopal church (1901) which has been preserved as a significant landmark in town since then.

Westwood was a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States during the 19th century. It was located on the west side of Westwood Creek and had a population of about 1,500 people at its peak in 1875. The town was named after Captain John Westwood and his family who settled there in 1784. On July 3, 1875, Westwood incorporated as a borough. In 1898, Westwood became an unincorporated community within Middlesex County. The first Europeans to enter what is now Westwood were Dutch traders who came to the region in 1624. They named the area "Westervelt" after their captain sailing out from Amsterdam with supplies for Fort Nassau on Long Island Sound. The first permanent European settlers were German Protestants who arrived around 1784. They called the area "Nassau". In 1794 General James Wilkinson landed at Easton Cove on Patriots' Island and took possession of land that includes present-day Westwood Creek and part of today's Sayre Heights neighborhood. He sold this land to local farmers for $1 per acre ($40 per square mile). The township was formed from parts of two other townships – North Brunswick Township (now Elizabeth) and South Brunswick Township (now Hasbrouck Heights). A railway line was built through Westwood by hydraulic fracturing techniques in 1922; this led to an increase in traffic and businesses along Route 9 which crossed the creek near present day Greenfield Avenue and White Street just east of town limits. At one time there were over 100 businesses located along Route 9 alone! The post office was established in 1812 at issue number 4653; it moved from Crystallia to Eastonburgh (now Elizabeth) in 1815 under Postmaster General Edward Everett Hale becauseCrystallia lacked an adequatepost office until then! It closed on October 20, 1893 due to lack of mail volume!
Westwood was first settled in 1795 by Dutch immigrants. The area was then known as "W Hogehoesheide". In 1814, the village of Westwood was formed from parts of East Linden Township and portions of South Hackensack Township. The name "Westwood" is derived from a location west of the Monmouth River. In 1868, part of New Brunswick County became attached to Middlesex County, and Westwood became a township in Middlesex County. On October 1, 1898, it merged with Garden City Township to form the new borough of Gloucester City. On January 1, 1999, it merged with Sayreville Borough to form the new borough of Edison Borough. In 1974, West Woodland were combined with neighboring Edison Borough to form the new township of Edison. In 1984-1985, portions of Sayreville were annexed into West Woodland and on February 14th that year Edison incorporated as a city under New Jersey law while remaining an unincorporated township
