After annexation by Newark in1974, many changes took place at Westwood including reduced residential density; decreased support for local industries; and disappearance of any remaining cultural attractions or educational opportunities (though some remain today). While these changes did not completely reflect what had once existed at Westwood – they did bring about some significant changes that unfortunately didn’t receive nearly enough attention from locals or state officials alike. Westwood is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,906 at the 2010 census. Westwood was incorporated as a village on November 3, 1868, from portions of Hackensack and Uniontown. On October 2, 1876, Westwood became part of the new township of Morris. On July 1, 1908, the townships of Hackensack and Uniontown were combined to form the new township of Morrisock with an area of . On May 14th 1951 Penn Central Railroad donated land to create a community on what is today's east side of Interstate 95 between Freeport Junction and East Rutherford. The name "Morrisock" was chosen because it reminded commuters who traveled through Westwood that they were still in Pennsylvania when they reached Morristown in New Jersey. The first home bought by the community's founders was a two-story frame cottage which was occupied by Mrs. Alice Kaplan until her death in 1955; after her death it passed to her son Rabbi Abraham Kaplan until his daughter married Drs. Maurice Schwartz and Esther Spitzer in 1978 who purchased it from him in 1984; finally it passed to their granddaughter Drs. Saul Spitzer and Meir Dror Spitzer who live there currently with their four children (Chaim (Sheila), Eliezer (Hanan), Rivka (Linda) and Yaakov). The Village had its own school district until consolidation with Morristown Township on February 1st 1960 - that school district is now known as Morris Township Public Schools
