The City helped support Insull with financial assistance during World War I while he developed additional businesses such as power plants and automobile manufacturing; these efforts led to Westfield becoming one of America's most important commercial center during this period. In 1951, two brothers – Aharonoff brothers – purchased the abandoned Singer Sewing Machine Company building on North Market Street from their father-in-law Abraham Chaitkin for $1 million dollars which they used for their business empire that included department stores Macy’s Inc., JCPenney Co., Sears Roebuck & Co., Kmart Corporation, and 20 other specialty businesses across eight states before their death in 1984. Their family name still drives much of today's local industry: Aharonoff Brothers Associates owns about 65% of all retail sales throughout New Jersey outside Newark Airport.) On May 15th of 2017 the Township announced they would be holding an election for Mayor on June 7th which will select one individual to serve as Mayor for 3 years.
