As a result, WestFIELD became an acceptable alternate spelling for both townships throughout most of Middle America during this time until finally settling on its current form around 1960-1962 following a survey conducted by the Princeton Review Company which showed that it had been used more frequently than either WEST or EAST during that period. The first stores opened near where Interstate 78 intersects with Route 22 about two miles east of present day downtownWestfield. This area would become known as Main Street since much later when I-78 replaced US 22V approximately two blocks north of Main Street between Seventh Avenue and Eighth Avenue SW In 1903, Joppa Oil Refining Company began operations adjacent to what is today North Park Mall south of I-78 Exit 287A In 1954, Bethlehem Steel Corporation began operations across from SouthPark Shopping Center east off I-78 EBKwy In 1984, American International Raceway opened nearby just west off I-78 exit 287B

It has been estimated that over 100 businesses participated in the festivities including several dozen manufacturers of crafts products such as quilts and rugs; 20 cultural organizations; 2 symphony orchestras; 5 Legionnaires' Association chapters; 15local governments; 12 churches/synagogues; 3 fire departments...the list goes on! The parade involved over 50 vehicles including floats made up exclusively of children's toys while adults marched wearing colorful costumes representing various industries or fields of endeavor such as agriculture or engineering
