Westfield is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 20,403 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest town in Middlesex County after Newark and the tenth-largest municipality in New Jersey. Westfield is one of four towns in Bergen County that are both incorporated municipalities and do not have any county government; the others are Paramus (but with no borough), Hackensack, and Teaneck. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Westfield Township on May 10, 1774, by way of Perth Amboy on horseback from Morristown. They were led by Capt. John Woolridge under cover of darkness to avoid being seen by the Native Americans who lived near Fort Lee at that time. The first house built on what is now Main Street was built by Captain Woolridge's brother Isaac about 1775; it still stands today as part of the childhood home of Seneca Park resident Edwin Epps Jr., Jr., which he developed into a luxury apartment complex known as "Epps Manor". On November 3, 1806, the township was established from portions of Monmouth Township including Rahway and East Orange. On February 14, 1911, it became an independent municipality when it split from Monmouth Township due to disagreements over zoning changes within its borders which had been made without input from residents or township officials - this change also happened because then-mayor James Pendergast believed that incorporation would lead to more taxes for Westfield than Boynton Beach which was then only a poplar beach resort community east of Atlantic City proper; these issues continue to be debated to this day. In 1951–1952 (the late1950s through early 1960s), Westfield experienced significant growth due to its location as one of three communities within Bergen County that shared a common airport – Teaneck did not join until 1961 – and its status as an industrial center caused businesses such as Ford Motor Company and Carrier Corporation to set up shop there during this time period; business development continued even after Bergen County withdrew its support for cooperative efforts seeking regional economic development during the 1970s recession following World War II ended without victors for Europe). The name comes from the English word "west," meaning east of the mountains, and "field," meaning rural land. The first Europeans to visit what is now Westfield were Dutch farmers in 1614 who named it Hoogeweert because they saw a rise in the hills to the northeast. In 1737, Robert Morris built a gristmill on top of an old millstream near present-day Main Street that served as the nucleus of what would become modern-day Westfield. By 1800, there were more than 100 residents living in Westfield Township and its outlying areas. In 1835, John Stratton founded Stratton's Mills which became one of the largest textile mills in America. Over time, other successful businessmen such as George Washington Carver and Elias Howe helped shape Westfiled's economy into what it is today: diversified with strengths including retail sales (the first grocery store opened here), health care services (including a hospital), manufacturing (from auto tires to ovens), real estate development (the industry’s first shopping mall) and professional sports teams including the Newark Bears football team from 1922 to 1966 and then the New York Rangers hockey team from 1966 to 1991 before being moved to Arlington Heights after the Brooklyn Nets moved there in 2016.
