Westfield, New Jersey is a town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The population was 34,822 at the 2010 census. The name Westfield comes from the English words "west" and "field". It became a borough on May 1, 1881, from part of Monmouth Township. On October 15th of that year, it merged with nearby East Brunswick to form the new borough of Westfield. In 1908, it annexed the adjacent village of North Brunswick and the following year became an unincorporated community. On January 1st of 1949, it again became a borough when parts of Edison Township were added to it as well as North Brunswick Village. Westfield is home to many large multinational companies including IBM and Procter & Gamble. Its largest shopping center is called The Mall at Westfield Garden State Parkway which has over 300 stores and restaurants including Macy's and Sears. In addition to its mall there are several smaller shopping centers scattered throughout town including one near I-95 and another near Route 84/US 401/NJ Transit's Penn Station which houses Lord & Taylor Retail Store plus two JCPenney locations as well as numerous small family businesses such as Lowe's Home Depot and Toys "R" Us

Westfield is a city in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 58,769 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Westfield derives from an English name meaning "west of the Horseshoe." The city was founded by James Scott and his wife Catherine in 1789 on land that had been purchased from the Lenape people by Colonel John Cadwalader. The first settler in Westfield was James Caldwell who built a farm there in 1792. In 1812, Captain John Rodgers built a log cabin here which became known as Rodgers Cabin after him. In 1824, Colonel Robert Morris bought 1,500 acres (64 hectares) of land east of Westfield from James Scott for $10,000 and began to develop it into what is now called Morris Park. At that time, Morris Park consisted of only five houses and consisted largely of woods and meadows with some small ponds. In 1830, Smith & lenesse (now Verizon) established their headquarters on Morristown Road near present-day Rutgers University before moving tomorrows first office building at 300 Bloom Street in 1839 which still stands today as one of the earliest tenants at that location outside of Newark or Jersey City. That same year saw the opening of what would become one of the most important local businesses: The Newark Daily News Company store at 5th Avenue and Market Streets which opened its doors to customers on October 15th 1841 just four days after Trenton's incorporation as a town through an act passed by the General Assembly following up on petitions brought by Peter Kropotkin and others requesting justification for their own independent status within New Jersey despite being subject to state jurisdiction since they were physically situated within Princeton County! An early signatory to this day is William Cushman who resided at 222 Bloom Street during much of its history until he moved out circa 1905 when he became president/founder/director/chief executive officer (CEO) Bricklin Builders Incorporated located adjacent property currently occupied by One Fifth Avenue South LLC where he remainsChairman emeritus today
Westfield, New Jersey was founded in 1764 as an agricultural and mercantile town. The townsite was named for Colonel Sir George Westfield, who donated land to the town. The first white settler in what is now Westfield was Peter Halliday, who arrived in 1765. In 1812, the township of Westfield became a part of Bergen County. After the merger of Bergen and Middlesex counties in 1911, Westfield became a borough within the new county. On May 25, 1975, Westfield became a city after being granted cityhood by voters via referendum.
