On July 15th of that year (just months before World War I began), Mayor James Fenton dedicated all four blocks between Orange Avenue and Market Street to serve as an open-air market for local farmers who raised produce during summertime only - this event still marks one of the few times food shopping has been allowed inside municipal buildings in modern times! Westfield, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 26,827 at the 2010 census. The first settlement in what is now Westfield Township was made on April 12, 1797 when Andrew Carnegie and his family settled there as part of the purchase of land from the Pequot tribe. The township was created on March 14th, 1836 by an act of the NJ Legislature. On July 1st of that year it became a borough. On October 9th, 1849 Westfield became the seat of government for all Mercer County with incorporation as a village under its own charter dated November 15th. The original village population was 3269; however this number would grow to over 4900 by 1860 due to numerous new businesses opening up and people moving into the township from outlying locations such as Glassboro and Paramus. In 1892 it became one of twenty-one municipalities statewide which were granted automatic city status by then state Senator James Whelan following passage of the Municipal Authorities Law (Sections 2 & 4). This gave these municipalities broad powers similar to those enjoyed by cities in other states including: fire protection; police power; zoning authority; street improvement authority and more! For many years this status allowed Westfield to thrive as an independently functioning municipality with its own elected officials while also providing strong services to residents within Mercer County without havingto worry about government funding or approval. In 1937 however voting members petitioned for annexation into Camden City due to increased economic competition and political differences between Westfield and Camden but ultimately this request too was denied! During World War II much progress had been made within our municipally owned infrastructure such as building bridges over Monmouth River which led directly into Camden Harbour where large munitions plants were located (the plant closed in 1969 but some remnants still stand today) while others such as expanding public transportation were developed like establishing light rail systems throughout our municipality which continue until present day!
Westfield was a small town in Union County, New Jersey, until it merged with the larger township of Paramus on February 1, 2009. The merger created a new borough and removed Westfield from Union County's government.
