Westfield, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 20,827 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest county in New Jersey by land area and has the smallest population by density. Westfield is located east of Newark on the border of Union County and Mercer County. The first European to visit what is now Westfield was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 when he named it "Verrazano's Fort." The first settlers were Dutchmen who arrived in 1664. They built a mill called De Voorhees which still stands today as part of the town center. In 1795, George Washington visited Westfield while on his way to Trenton for his inauguration as President of the United States. At that time, Westfield had only a few hundred inhabitants and was known as "the most Remote Town in America." In 1834, the township was established with a population of 605 people. It received its current name from General James Ketchum who commanded American forces during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). The community grew rapidly thanks to its location near railroads and transportation routes. By 1872, there were 1,100 people living in Westfield Township and it had become an agricultural center with around 120 farms producing hay, oats, wheaten flour and other products such as cheese and butter. On January 26th 1912 two young men walked into town square wearing no clothes at all just to show how easy it would be for anyone to get dressed without ever leaving their house! This started something which would eventually lead to widespread clothing stores being opened up throughout rural America- this event became known as "The Clothes Show". During World War II: On September 2nd 1942 German soldiers invaded America through Operation Neptune's Spear; they landed on Long Island Harbor at Farmingdale Beach just outside of East Amherst NY; they proceeded inland across Pennsylvania into centralNJ; they reached Princeton NJ early evening on September 3rd 1942 (just before dark) after crossing over Lake Champlain; British troops surrounded American forces at Princeton Junction about 5 miles west of Princeton; US military responded by opening fire upon these invaders killing more than 100 German soldiers including officers & marines; aftermath some 2 million rounds were fired from 10mm machine guns & artillery resulting in over 500 casualties Casualties among Americans numbered between 50% & 75% Killed or missing included Generals Gerow (chiefs officer), Wagner (divisional commander), Hillman (Admiral commanding North Atlantic Fleet), King (Major General commanding XVIII Corps) captured prior occupation occurred within minutes following initial landing
In 1824, the first settlers in Westfield arrived from Delaware. The town was incorporated on March 1, 1827. In 1830, a mill was built and soon became a major employer in the community. The town passed through several changing hands until it was purchased by the state in 1865. It remained an agricultural center for many years before becoming a manufacturing town with heavy industry starting in the late 1800s. By World War II, Westfield had become one of New Jersey's most important industrial centers. Afterward, its growth slowed as development moved away from agriculture and toward service industries such as healthcare and technology.
