The first post-World War II target appeared in 1946 and measured 84 feet by 24 feet. At this point, it had two arms that could be turned so that it could fire accurately at any distance from the shooter. Today’s target is made from durable plastic and measures 43 by 28 inches square. The first gun target in Westfield, New Jersey was a blacksmith's forge. It was located on the old growth side of town off of Market Street. The first rifle target in Westfield, NJ was a stand for shooting at pigeons. It was located near the old water tower on Washington Boulevard. Rifle targets began to be developed in Westfield and neighboring towns in 1922 when the Ranges Sporting Goods store opened its doors. In 1923, a pistol range opened up on Main Street by Ira Matson and his brother-in-law Harry Wills. They also developed an airgun range which became known as “The Park” after it moved to Putnam Avenue in 1951. In 1938, the state of New Jersey authorized regulation of firearms with the passage of Assembly Bill No. 7 (A-27). This ordinance authorized the licensing, purchase and possession of handguns by law enforcement officials and provided for registration of handguns with local police departments and sheriff’s agencies. Regulations were placed upon handgun ownership beginning on July 1, 1938 with limitations that shotguns could only be possessed by licensed hunters/fishers or those owning rifles that could fire twenty rounds per minute or less per barrel without having been shot at more than three times; pistols must have a serial number distinguishing them from other pistols; rifles were not limited to any one manufacturer but must have been registered with the superintendent; all ammunition used in handguns must be stored unloaded and not sold or barterized until used; counties were allowed four years from date of enactment before they had to pass regulations implementing A-27 Gun registrations continued until 1956 when they were discontinued as part of larger changes brought about by then Senate President Joseph Lautenberg’s Gun Control bill (S-327). All handgun registrations were cancelled effective September 1st following enactment into law S-327 which made it illegal for anyone under eighteen years old to own or possess any handgun without having received a license from their local government et cetera
Westfield is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 24,521 at the 2010 census. Westfield is located on the east bank of the Paterson River, about 15 miles (24 km) north-northwest of Newark and 25 miles (40 km) south-southwest of Philadelphia. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would become Westfield were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1672 as indentured servants from Holland. In 1814, when Morrisania Township was created from portions of Middlesex and Union counties, Westfield became a part of that township. In 1851, when Morristown Township was formed from portions of Middlesex and Union counties, Westfield became a part of that township too. The town's name originated with John Westfeldt who donated land to make it a town; he named it after himself and his son Lewis Westersvelt (1775-1855). After years of debate by the townships' commissioners over which name to choose for the new township's citizens - "Middlesex" or "Westford" - they finally decided on "Westfield." In 1907, during its centennial year, Westfield built its first public library which remains open today as one of the largest public libraries in New Jersey. That same year also saw the opening of a schoolhouse which still serves students today. Westfield, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 16,651 at the 2010 census. Westfield was founded in 1784 by George Washington and his family as a farmstead on the west bank of the Delaware River. It became an incorporated municipality in 1836. The name "Westfield" originated from its location on horseback near where Washington's headquarters were located during the War of Independence. The township was formed from portions of Cumberland Township (now part of Hackensack) on December 15, 1836. On February 24, 1850, it was merged with Camden Township to form what is now Mercer County. In 1864, Mechanicsville and parts of North Brunswick were added to Westfields borough while East Brunswick and Rahway were annexed by Westfields borough until they became independent municipalities in 1924 and 1998 respectively. In 1927, the township began to provide education for citizens through its own high school system which continues today as Westford High School. In 1951-1952, Bethlehem Steel Company opened a steel plant within the township which has continued to producesteel products ever since; this facility also served as home to local community college until 1976 when it closed down due to heavy pollution concerns caused by production at that site combined with other nearby plants
