Westfield is a town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 11,362. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. The name "Westfield" first appeared on maps in 1781 as part of the land grant to Sir George Carteret from King George III. In 1812, Colonel James Hennepin founded what became known as Hennepin's Mills after purchasing 5 acres (20,000 m2) along with other mills within what would become Westfield Township. In 1836, John Pappas purchased land east of present-day Avenue J and built what became known as Pappas' Plaza which still stands today. By 1860, there were 27 stores and businesses located within the township limits with a total population of 1,824 people. The township was created February 14th, 1880 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature from portions of Rahway and Dumont townships; it was named for Samuel Gridley Westfield who had donated much property to be used for development in that area later on. The original boundaries followed Walpole Creek to its mouth at Hackensack River then northward along Route 23E to resume its course near where Princeton Street now intersects Route 83E/Hudson Street/Plymouth Road/Delaware Avenue until reaching Rutgers University property just south Of Midtown Drive across From Washington Boulevard/Rutgers University Ave./Lenox Road before terminating at Newtown Creek again northeast boundary traceable back to Rahway Township proper line approximately two miles prior thereto; thence by purchase from Rahway Township authorities all or any portion thereof lying open territory lying east beyond said limits cellular subscription lines Telephone companies having their wires extending through said boundaries without control or service being available therein existing telephone systems being interconnected thereby making it possible for people living close together to have conversation without having to go farfetched ideas about getting visitors out into this huge place

The name "Westfield" originated from a place called 'The Wood' in what is now Westfield Township and was anglicized to 'Westminster' by John Winthrop in 1664. In 1777, Benedict Arnold fought with General Howe at Trenton and became the first American general to desert his troops on British soil. In 1802, George Washington visited Westfield and spent two days here before leaving for Mount Vernon where he dedicated the White House. In 1844, during the Mexican–American War, Captain Moses Bowles of the 8th U S Infantry Regiment refused orders to march into Mexico City without bagpipes or drums because he believed that this would incite war between America and Mexico. He remained in Westfield until his death on October 20th at the age of ninety-six years old after a long military career which spanned over eighty years. After Captain Bowles's death many residents decided to adopt "Mosesbowles" as their name for themselves since no one else had an appropriate name for him among them all. During World War II many businesses were closed due to bombings but they have reopened since then thanks to Operation Varsity (the city's largest civic program ever). As part of Operation Homecoming America's Veterans Day ceremony Mayor James Fenton presented Commander-in-Chief Dwight Eisenhower with a plaque recognizing Americans who served in World War II - both officers and enlisted men - at Westminster High School gymnasium on September 12th 1948 Mr. Ike was deeply impressed by some displays including items from sailors who had been lost at sea during World War II On October 11th 1998 President Bill Clinton delivered remarks also taking part were Congressman Peter DeFazio Congressman Bob Menendez Chairman Don Edwards Jr Representative Howard Berman
