They named it "Hockenheim" after one of their Indian trading partners – Johann Hockenheimer, an Austrian trader living near Philadelphia who had journeyed downriver from Germany to trade with Native Americans during the 1620s. In 1714, British troops burned down the town's building season heathenish ceremonies which included a burning of a large tree in front of Meeting House Square (later Schoolhouse Square), followed by games and speeches about "the happy stream that courseeth through this place." In 1752, Jonathan Davenport became proprietor and developed land northwest of the square for housing developments; these would become known as Northumberland Row and Southumberland Row. On July 4th, 1851, when Delaware County was created from parts of Mercer and Sussex counties, Westfield became part of that new county too. Prior to World War II most residents worked on farms or in industry around Trenton-Ewing or Princeton Junction areas while some also mined natural resources such as coal or diamonds near nearby Monmouthshire Township (now Livingston). In 1945 ground was broken for what would become Penn Central Railroad's East Rutherford Terminal station; operations began two years later on November 3rd 1946 when Amtrak's Northeast Corridor service connected Newark Airport with Penn Station in Queensboro Plaza just east of Center Street across from Rutgers University (now Brown University) completing what would eventually be called The Northeast Corridor; during this time many factories closed up shop due to wartime rationing. With Interstate 95 expanding rapidly north into Mercer County in the early 1990s development accelerated along Essex Avenue between I-95/US Route 22 and I-295/US Route 27 becoming known as The Beltway with many large companies moving into formerly rural areas within minutes’ reach via Interstate 95 including Carrier Corporation making its home there before they moved out again once NAFTA started taking hold - something that still happens today with massive truck traffic coming into Harrisburg heading south through PA Turnpike towards Philly etc... Many small businesses have disappeared completely because competition has arrived online etc...
