Gun protection history in Westfield, New Jersey began with the founding of the town by Puritans in 1680. The town was originally named Newtown, but was renamed Westfield after Major General George Washington and Colonel John Forbes in 1784. In 1834, the first state police were established in the town and it became a borough on July 1, 1898. On December 4, 1912, Westfield became a city. The earliest guns used for protection in Westfield were handguns. A settler named David Shephard purchased a small rifle from Ebenezer Cooke in 1792. He used it to protect himself and his family from Indians during the American Revolution. After the war, shephard continued to purchase firearms and keep them safe until 1821 when he died at age 73 years old. His son Solomon also bought firearms and kept them safe until his death in 1826 at age 21 years old. In that year, Captain Nathaniel Bailey purchases two pistols from Ebenezer Cooke which he used as part of his militia service against Native Americans following the Battle of Monmouth Court House on April 12th, 1778. One of the first gunsmiths to shop inWestfield was Nathan Frye who opened his business on Market Street on October 2nd, 1798. Frye manufactured pistols for local Sheriff Jameson and other law enforcement officers as well as private individuals for self-defense purposes throughout most of its history until 1865 when Powder magazine fire destroyed many businesses including Frye’sBarleycorn store which remained standing until 1911 nonetheless becoming one of only two buildings still standing within downtownWestfield today that survived both World War II bombings (the other being Macy’s Department Store). Frye is recognized as one of America’s preeminent pistol smiths with over 200 patents granted between him and others including Nicholas-Jacques Conte who operated an Early American Pistol Factory located west of Philadelphia between 1800-1802; “Frye & Company manufacture all manner Of Gun Parts For The Use Of Lawful Citizens And Militias Wherever They May Be found And Will Do All That Is possible To Keep Their Work Unchanged During This Unhappy Time At Home As Well As Overseas When Required” Aerial photos dating back to 1918 show that damage had been inflicted upon several structures within downtownWestFIELD since WWII including: multiple brick stores (including Partridge’s Clothing Store) now demolished; partof Prentiss Hall now gone; First National Bank building (& surrounding properties),now apartments;numerous office buildings (Wright-Patterson Building among them); Stroud Tower now home to various restaurants/bars/stores etc.; numerous homes have been lost or replaced entirely since then leaving little remaining evidence AS TO WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PREVIOUS CITY OF WESTFIELD In addition aerial photos dating back to 1918 show numerous vacant lots within blocks distance of what is currently known DowntownWestFIELD - all indications are that these Lots were once occupied by businesses/ residences which have since been supplanted by new construction equivalents

Westfield is a town in Gloucester County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,912 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous community in Gloucester County after Camden and it is the largest municipality in Gloucester County by area. The first settlers in what would become Westfield were farmers who arrived in 1764 from England. In 1814, George Washington and his party passed through this town while on their way to Princeton University. They stopped at the now demolished house known as "the White House" on Market Street for dinner before continuing on their journey. In 1835, a group of men from Dover Township (now part of East Brunswick) founded a new township called Westfield on land that they had purchased from Nicholas Morin and others. They named it in honor of General James Fenton who had fought with them during the American Revolution. The town became an agricultural village with about 100 homes and five stores before becoming an incorporated village on May 1, 1908 following approval by a vote of residents over a petition campaign led by Methodist preacher Averill Harriman. The incorporated status was due to pressure from Harrison Township which had been formed earlier that year as part of an effort to merge all of Gloucester County into one government under one authority. On December 15, 1920, Westfield annexed portions of North Brunswick Township (now Union City). On April 14, 1922, South Brunswick Township (now Vineland) joined Westfieldtownship until its annexation by Middlesex Borough on February 28th of that year resulting in the total population being 6,468 residents including 3121 businesses as reported by the Census Bureau for 2032 according to their 2020 report prepared for NJ Statutes § 92:3-2a). During World War II there was much construction activity related to military production within or nearWestfield including airfields used by both European and American Air Forces; munitions plants; ammunition factories; shipyards; and housing developments for workers involved in these industries such as bombers crews stationed at Elizabeth Air Force Base or assembly lines building tanks at Monmouth Shipyard etc.. These areas have since been abandoned but some remnants remain such asElizabeth AFB which includes extensive bomber mechanics Hangar #4 where planes are stored during storage periods throughout the year outside temperatures down to -25 degrees F (-34 degrees C) . There also remains significant evidence associated with these installations such as bomb shelters/bomb proof vaults constructed beneath runways adjacent to these areas which served as emergency landing strips if needed during wartime operations On November 26th 2017 Mayor Jeannette Meehan announced plans for renovations costing $27 million dollars which will include adding more than 1800 jobs over 10 years If fully realized “the project could create up to 12 acres (49 hectares), making it possible for people living within walking distance of our city center” according to press release issued
