Westfield was founded in 1780 by farmers and their families who moved from Sussex County. It became a city on December 12, 1907. The first settlement in what is now Westfield Township was called "Barton's Mills". The name was changed to "Westfield" in 1780 because of the growth of the community. In 1801, Patrick Connery built a gristmill on the west side of present-day Market Street in what is now part of downtown Westfield. In 1825, Samuel Morse established his telegraph line between Newark and Philadelphia with equipment located at Barton's Mills before moving it to its current location on Market Street in 1829. In 1861, Isaac Noyes donated land east of present-day Park Avenue for development into an agricultural township including today's eastern portion of Westfield Township. On May 1, 1865, portions were added to Mercer County and became known as Westfields; this area would later become part of Easton Township when that township was created on March 15th of that year. In 1907, residents voted to become a city and named it after John D Rockefeller Jr., founder and CEO of Standard Oil Company (now ExxonMobil). At the time itwas one of only three cities in America with more than 1 million people living within its jurisdiction limits – the others being Detroit (1 million) and Chicago (2 million). The city has grown rapidly since then: population reached 4 million by 2000 and 7 million by 2010 according to the U.S. Census Bureau estimates!
