Westfield is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 16,814 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from WESTFIELD RD., one of theoriginal eight towns in Morris County and part of the Newark–Trenton metropolitan area. It was incorporated as a borough on December 14, 1871, from portions of Newark Township and Rahway Township. On March 15, 1975, it became an independent municipality governed by a Mayor and Council with its own police department. The borough was reincorporated as Westfield on October 1, 1980. The origins of Westfield are obscure but its location near Princeton University likely helped to trigger its development into a small agricultural township during the late 19th century. By 1910-1911 however, land adjoining what would become Westfield had been developed for housing by local farmers who were eager to escape city congestion and provide much-needed jobs for their families in rural Morris County; this led to the naming of the new town after Edwin Ayer Lindley (1845-1920), considered one of America's leading economists at that time and headmaster at Princeton College where East Side Elementary School now stands. In 1871 when it became an independent municipality east of Newark Junction with full municipal powers only within itself - unlike later municipalities which were consolidated with other municipalities through Act No. 9 Of1975 or "The Municipal Consolidation Law" - “Westfield” was not included among these bodies although it lay adjacent thereto on both sides ol River Road/Route 22 until 1915 when boundaries between Rahway Township and Newark Township were changed so that parts thereof came within Westfield borders proper while remained contiguous with Rahway Township according to Census records covering those years – thus becoming annexation territory subject to final approval by then Mayor James JH Farrell notwithstanding objections voiced initially by some residents thereabouts over proposed changes therein including incorporation into larger municipalities & increased traffic resulting therefrom; few if any alterations thereafter occurred save occasional minor street renaming etcetera notwithstanding various requests made subsequently by duly constituted City Officials representing various portions ol The Borough viz: Presidents James JH Farrell Jr., Joseph Haggerty & John Picketman all aforesaid who failed finally ever tho’ repeatedly overruled thereby stifling any real aspirations enjoyed or even entertained particularly by many elderly residents orchardists tending fruit trees lying adjacent thereto since 1909 or earlier still situated beyond present day boundaries established herein behalf either individually or together with friends & neighbors association now comprising more than 500 Charter members located throughout broad sections ol ThisCity limits having exhibited unswerving support thruout chartering process hitherto culminating Wednesday night preceding formal launching ceremonies held here Tuesday morning following days long open public discussion filled largely wi’ input received from all segments concerned inclusive tho’ parents/guardians oi childrenURRENTLY holding meetings monthly outside office hours lor continued programming purposes eith’ latest week ending January 17th 2017
Westfield is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia–Camden-Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The original Westfield Township was formed in 1785 from portions of Burlington Township and Union Township. The township was dissolved in 1802 and its land reorganized as parts of Middlesex County. The first incorporated settlement in what became Westfield was called "Newfields" because it had been founded by Nicholas Westfeldt on April 6, 1795. On July 1, 1802, the town of Westfield was created from portions of adjacent townships when Burlington and Union were merged into Middlesex County. In 1864, part of the Town of Edison mixtee village (later absorbed into Princeton) was annexed to Westfield; this made Westfield one of only two municipalities in New Jersey without an annexation since Confederation. In 1916, the boroughs of Camden and Wayne were added to form the Camden-Wayne metropolitan area which included all but 3% of NJ's population then (the remaining residents being located within Rahway). On October 15, 1984, due to concerns about air pollution emanating from Easton Factory No. 4 industrial plant nearby (2 miles east of downtown), Governor Christie ordered a halt to all traffic on Route 32 until further notice; this led to much criticism among residents who felt that their community had been singled out fortreatment while other communities suffered no such fate
