In 1849, George Washington Carver moved from Camden to Westfield to start his farm there. Westfield is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,569 at the 2010 census. It was part of the Philadelphia-based media market before it was made an independent municipality in 2018. The area that would become Westfield was first settled by Dutch settlers in 1682 as "Hertogenbosch". The name may have been derived from either Hendrick de Vries or Philips van der Werf and it means "upper wood" or "forested place". In 1719, John Morin bought land east of Westfield from Simon Teague for £1,000. He built a mill and named it after himself, Morin's Mill (now known as the Morris Patent Museum). In 1812, James Potter bought much of what is now Easton Township from Joshua Henshaw for $2,500. Potter founded Pottersville and named it after himself – Pottersville (today's White Marsh Township). On July 1, 1814, Westfield became one of thirty townships within Middlesex County when it was created from parts of Huntingdon Township and Burlington Township. On December 12 of that year, President James K. Polk signed legislation creating Middlesex County by combining portions of two previous counties: Hunterdon and Burlington. On November 30th 1908/November 29th 1907 trustees voted to annex what is now Northumberland Borough into the township so that its population would increase with no real change in properties or services provided by Northumberland Borough residents to those living within our township boundaries; this annexation prospectus appears on page 6pof township roll book dated 11/30/08 ). It should be noted that Northumberland Borough did not become an independent municipality until 2018!
