Westfield, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,814 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the location of a small community on the west side of Westfield Lake. The first settlers in what is now Westfield were Germans who arrived in 1795. They founded a village called Wernersville and named it after their leader Rabbi Isaac Wernersohn. In 1814, they moved to what is now Westfield and began to build a town around their new village. They named it after themselves, which means "the field where I am born." The first store in Westfield was built by Benjamin Fenton in 1819. The first post office was established in 1822 and operated for six years before being closed due to lack of customers. The first school was opened in 1830 and operated until 1865 when it was replaced by an academy that still operates today. In 1871, the railroad arrived and started tracks through Westfield. This made farming easier as farmers could move goods closer to market; however, this also led to increased congestion on Route 22 which caused problems for residents over time. In 1923, zoning changes allowed for development within its boundaries; this led to the construction of many homes that continue to be used today as part of the community center complex known as "The Village". "Westfields" nickname originates from when people would drive by and call out "west fields" because they saw everything located there including farms, mills etc."
