West New York is a borough of New Jersey and an unincorporated community located in the county of Hudson. As of the 2010 United States Census, its population was 8,716. West New York is bordered by EastNewark to the north, Paramus to the east, Paterson to the south, and Haslet to the west. The name "West New York" was first applied as late as 1814 when British soldiers were stationed there during the Peninsular War. The origin of West New York is obscure but it may derive from Dutch word "Westerwijk", meaning "the Western side". One theory suggests that early settlers in this area called themselves "Westerschelde" or "west coast people". Another theory suggests that some early residents simply named their settlement after their home country – for example, Ireland for English-speaking settlers and Netherlands for French-speaking settlers. In 1814, British soldiers invaded America and occupied what is now West New York including present day West New York City. In 1835, John Hylan settled on land near modern day Hackensack which he named Belle Vue after his home country Belle Époque in France. The town continued to be known as Hackensack until 1840 when it became part of the new township ofParamus Township when it was created from parts of Bergen Township. In 1799, George Washington visited and surveyed what are today Paramus Boulevard and Park Avenue in present day Paramus; these straights were later called Washington Boulevard/Park Avenue due to their proximity to George Washington's house at Mount Vernon Estate.] On October 26th 1870 (the date commemorates General Anthony Wayne's surrender at Saratoga), US forces burned down much of what is now Business Park along with many other villages on Long Island Sound between Manhattan Beach and Staten Island due to rebel activity during Reconstruction era following Civil War. West New York, located in the Borough of Manhattan on the west side of the Bronx River, was a Dutch colony from 1624 to 1675. In 1785 it became part of New Jersey. It is now an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Westchester County, New York. The area that would become West New York was first settled by Dutch farmers who arrived in 1624 as part of a land grant from the Dutch East India Company to Pieter Bracewell. The original name for the area was "Onderwijsmanheiligen" or "Undergraduate School". In 1675, after English settlers had overrun much of what is now Hollandia (New Netherland), the British took over and renamed everything except for Staten Island which they called "Island Number Four." So when English colonists started arriving in what is now West New York, they called them "Wyomingians", because Hollandia was still under British control. The British also granted titles to many of these early settlers such as Thomas Middelburg and Hendrick Van Swert. In 1785, when America gained independence from Great Britain, West NewYork became part of new Jersey. By then it had already lost some its Dutch character and most people spoke English rather than Dutch. A few miles east of where it currently stands there were two smallDutch settlements: Haverstoke and Voorheeswyck on Long Island Sound. But these did not last long because English settlers began moving into those areas soon after independence; by 1800 about 60% of all residents in West NewYork spoke English fluently. Some important events during this time include: 1) On July 4th, 1776, during the American Revolution, John Adams gave a speech at Whitehall declaring that “This great Republic” would be defended by all means possible including subversion through guerrilla warfare; 2) On November 25th – 26th 1814 General James Knyazevich issued orders ordering Russian troops to cross over Sands Point Bridge into Brooklyn so they could besiege Fort Washington; 3) On February 14th 1845 an act authorizing $5 million for building a railroad between Albany and Newark passed both houses with only one dissenting vote; 4) On December 12th 1862 President Abraham Lincoln signed Executive Order 9066 making slaves free within three years; 5)On January 1st 1863 General George McClellan surrendered Atchison Junction Kansas Territory to Confederate forces
The town of West New York was founded by Dutch settlers in 1624. The area now known as West New York was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. It became a separate British colony in 1764. In 1814, the town was renamed to honor General James Wilkinson, who had fought during the War of 1812.
