On November 15th, 1914, pursuant to an act passed by theNJ Assembly, portions of Orange Township were annexed intoWest Nyack Township In addition to its role as a bedroom community for Paramus and East Rutherford—both across Route 27 from its boundaries—West Nyack has been home to major shopping malls such as Galleria Mall and Oneille Plaza since its incorporation; however these have all closed or mothballed since 2000 due largely to economic factors such as competition from Paramus's North American Free Trade Agreement-era growth spurt while also facing increasing competition from nearby East Rutherford's development which included both enclosed malls and single-family homes becoming more prevalent throughout much of 2001; howeverEast Rutherford's decline continues today with its only major store being one dot on Route 27 next door to Paramus' PSEG Park which anchors their downtown area today
