The city of West New York was founded in 1714 by the Dutch settlers on the east bank of the Hudson River. The original settlement was called "Hague" and was located along what is now Wall Street. In 1727, a group of English colonists named Eastburn settled in what is now West New York. The English name for the area today was given to it by General George Washington when he visited the area in 1776. In 1815, the city became part of New Jersey as part of the stateshood proceedings following the United States purchase of Louisiana from Spain. West New York continued to be an official municipality within New Jersey until it merged into Elizabeth City Township in 1911.
