The history of West New York, in particular the town of West Nyack, began with Dutch settlers arriving in 1624. The area was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland and was first settled by farmers who came from Walloon and Flemish backgrounds. In 1626, a group of English settlers arrived and began to farm the land around present-day Nyack. The English name for the area was then "Nyack Township". In 1814, when New Jersey became a United States state, Nyack Township became part of Hunterdon County. In 1828, it became part of Morris County. By 1830, there were over 100 families living in Nyack Township. The population had increased to about 500 people by 1840. In 1846, when Morris County merged with Hunterdon County, Nyack Township went along with it. As a result of this merger, Nyacks residents lost their own township status but continued to use the name "West New York" until 1948 when they regained their own municipality status under the new government structure set up inNJ after World War II. During most of its history as an incorporated municipality (1846-1968), West New York experienced significant development due to its location at the crossroads between early 19th century farming communities on one side and industrial towns on the other side of what is now Interstate 81/976 across Route 976 from Edison Junction to Matawan Junction—a distance that has only decreased since then because Interstate 81 splits everything into two lanes near Exit 7A/7B southbound and northbound on I-81). There have been many notable events associated with both its growth as an incorporated municipality during this time period as well as its annexation by neighboring municipalities: These include:the opening in 1898 of Newark's High Bridge which allowed vehicular traffic crossing River Hudson;the establishment in 1951 (just five years after incorporation)of John Pugh Airport within easy access from all sides including those borderingHunterdon County thanks to NorthJerseyAirport Inc.;the construction beginning in 1957 (and continuing until 1978)of Morristown's largest shopping mall;the dedication ceremony for Governors Highway 8 project on October 15th 1962 which designated NJ's longest continuous expressway eastward starting at exit 10 off I-81South;The establishment in 1968 (just three years after incorporation)of Morristown Municipal Utility Authority which provided essential water services for all residents withinMorristown Borough through separate pipes running beneath Main Street bisecting each block;and finallythe opening onto Park Avenue South by developer Harry Rosenfeld following protests from local citizens who wanted access only to wealthyResidents."
