The name "West New York" is derived from English settlers who arrived during Governor George Washington's 1777 military campaign against France in what is now Westchester County. The Dutch founded a small town called Brielle on Governors Island opposite Manhattan in 1624 as part of their attempt to protect their trading post at that location from French settlement. In 1664, English colonists established Sir John Hackett's Plantation on Long Island Sound between Perth Amboy and Weehawken Harbor; this became known as Hackettstown after him. In 1692, Westchester County was formed from parts of Bergen County; West Nyack was incorporated into that county in 1708. The first courthouse for West Nyack was built in 1710 on present-day Court House Square; it burned down in 1802 but was replaced with a new structure which still stands today. In 1834, Singularly Yours (later renamed The Daily News) began publication as an evening paper published by brothers Cyrus Hanks & James Bateson at 114 Broad Street; they sold it to Othmar Spengler in 1904 for $1 million cash plus stock options which were exercised one year later for an total value of $13 million ($304 per share). From 1904 until his death two years later, Spengler published both morning and evening newspapers under several different names including "The Daily News", "The Evening News", "Daily Mirror", "National Herald Tribune" before finally settling on "West New York Gazette". That paper merged with another local morning tabloid owned by William Randolph Hearst – first The Journal Star (later Hearst Newspapers) – effective November 3rd 1959 to form Hearst Publications' daily newspapers: The Queens Chronicle (now El Diario), The Bronx Express (now DNAinfo), and The Staten Island Observer (now Staten Island Advance). From October 14th 1962 through September 30th 1976, WPLJFM also operated as a radio station serving portions of South Brooklyn alongside then-WBBM AM 1080 kHz usingconi transistors instead of valves providing sound quality similar to television broadcasts - See Radio History For More Details
