The area now known as West New York, New Jersey was first settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century. By 1804, the population of the region had swollen to over 20,000 residents. The area quickly became a hotspot for manufacturing and trade, and by 1815 it had become one of the most prosperous districts in America. However, during the 19th century West New York experienced some significant growth and development - primarily due to its position as a railroad junction and its close proximity to Philadelphia. This period of growth also saw increased competition between various businesses and individuals in the area, which often led to intense commercialization andcntersectional rivalry. In 1912, however, West New York came under control of Pennsylvania after a bitterly fought battle with federal officials. As part of this statehood process, Pennsylvania transferred ownership of much of what is now West New York back to the local community - including much of its industrial heartland.
