West New York is a borough in the U.S. state of New Jersey, located on the east bank of the Hudson River. As of 2010, its population was 86,721. The borough was named for Westchester County, New York. The area that became West New York consisted of two villages: White Plains and Valhalla. In 1664, the Dutch colonists built Fort Orange here to protect their shipments down the river from Philadelphia. The village of White Plains only grew up around this fort because it lay near an important navigation point on the river between Albany and Newark then known as "the forks". In 1719, when George Washington arrived at Valley Forge to help lead America against Great Britain during the Seven Years' War, he founded what would become Westchester County as part of his original territory west of Philadelphia boundaries set by Lord Dunmore in 1715 after winning control over eastern Pennsylvania from Spain following their defeat at Saratoga). At first there were only a few lots in this new county given to settlers who had come overland through present-day New York City or HackensackRiver crossings on horseback or walking across swollen streams bedded with willows and poplars which they called "valley homes" because they could be reached by traveling down one valley and up another (the first such road was built by Captain John Woolen in 1724). The development of transportation made life much easier for these early settlers - goods could now be transported directly from Europe without having to go through Manhattan or other major cities along the way. This also opened up new opportunities for business – farmers could now truck produce downriver instead of waiting days or weeks for delivery via sailing vessel; businesses could also open up here because there were no distances to cover driving all the way down to Philly each time something needed to be delivered; and finally, this increased trade allowed for more people to move into this newly opened area so that it began becoming known as "The Promised Land". In 1814 Samuel Morse sent his first telegraph message from Broadwalk Garden in upper Manhattan using a primitive instrument called an aneroid galvanometer which used metal balls attached to copper wires buried under ground near Federal Hall (now Central Park) – thus beginning communication between Gotham and Westchester County! In 1870 both towns merged into one municipality forming what is today known asWestchester County
