Wanaque is a borough in New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,497 at the 2010 census. Wanaque was formed on November 3, 1881 from part of Rahway Township. The name comes from the Mohawk word "wanequah," meaning "to trade." The first settler in what is now Wanaque was Nicholas Wecker who arrived in 1795 and built his home on what is now State Road 21. He also bought some land east of present-day Wanaque and set up a tannery there. In 1824, Isaac McCoy settled near present-day Main Street and soon began to purchase land hereabouts for town development. By 1830, McCoy had laid out what is today Easton Streets, North streets and Third Avenue NW. Some years later he donated all of his property across Third Avenue NE to the borough for use as a public parkland known as McCoy Park. In 1881, when Rahway Township split into two parts, Wanaque became one of the two new townships formed within it – along with Lincoln Township (which later merged into Rahway). Today's boundaries were established by township lines that were drawn during theetts’ partitioning of Paterson County in 1874; these lines are still maintained by the NJ Partition Commission. At that time much of what is now eastern section of Rahway was included within Wanaque while much of western section including present day Wanaque was annexed by Lincoln Township (now part of South Brunswick). The population growth rate inWanaque has been relatively high over the last few decades due to its close proximity to New York City and its steady stream of jobs both inside and outside New Jersey’s largest city.
