Wanaque, New Jersey is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. Wanaque is located on the border of Mercer and Union Counties and its ZIP Code is 07887. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.2 square miles (9 km²), all of it land. The first European settler in what would become Wanaque was James Fenton in 1795. He built a cabin on his farmstead which he named "Fenton's Ferry". By 1811, there were 10 families living in Wanaque and two stores operated by farmers George Prentice and Nicholas Hahn. In 1814-1815, three men from Pennsylvania - Jacob Beiler, Samuel Morse and Isaac Noyes - established a ferry service between Hackensack and Trenton called the Trenton Ferry Company. The company grew rapidly because it allowed people to get goods quickly into Trenton for sale or shipment to points east. After selling its interest in the ferry business to John Stevens in 1825, Stevens founded an iron works near modern day Edison Place that became one of America's largest manufacturers of cast iron products before declining during the Great Depression. In 1830, Wanaque had six small shops making items such as saddles, shoes and wagon parts; only one still exists today as an antique store known as White Sands Antiques & Collectibles Inc.. In 1837-38 General David Hunter explored what would become Mercer County while traveling through New Jersey looking for new land to settle after his purchase of 1/3interest in Fort Monmouth from Governor James Ketchum On July 12th 1840 he arrived at Saugus Landing Bridge where he met with George Washington Irving who recommended him inland to explore what lay beyond Princeton Junction NJ on section 4 west side lot 11 within present day Tinton Falls Borough limits situated south west corner Hudson River Bayou about 6 chains northwest from river mouth forming southern boundary line between those same boroughs . The General then proceeded upriver until reaching settlement site now located along Hudson River bounded by sections 4 north from river mouth eastBound by section 5 south from river mouth thence northerly Bound by lines demarcated by white earth hills bearing Harlem Road running due north along said boundaries thence southerly across said hills joining Tinton Falls Borough limits . At this point surveyor William Bulfinch had surveyed part of what would become Mercer County but no village developed so hunting became their primary occupation until 1850 when they started clearing land for agriculture which led to their settling hereabouts permanently

Wanaque is a borough in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,077 at the 2010 census. Wanaque was formed on February 13, 1879 from portions of the former towns of Highland and Whitman. The name "Wanaque" is Mohawk word meaning "place of refuge." The first settler in Wanaque was John Morse. He came to the area in 1792 and built a mill on the banks of the Monmouth River. In 1824, Wanaque became part of what was then known as Perth Amboy Township. On October 26, 1829, it became an incorporated borough when it received a charter from the New Jersey Legislature. In 1916, Wanaque annexed parts of Highland Heights and Whitman Boroughs to make up its total population size. At that time there were only 3 businesses in Wanaques entire township (the post office closed in 1931). On April 10th 1909 an assessment for $4 per acre was passed by Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders against all properties within boundaries proposed for annexation into Hudson County by WANAQUE BOROUGH having no inhabitants therein except military or other public buildings etcetera assessed at $2/acre more than their respective owner's assessments theretoat amounting to $6/acre which together with rateable improvements appertaining thereto amounted to about one third of present day valuation thereofand containing also about forty acres now included within said limits aforesaid being more than any spot on this side or shore attached thereto since incorporation’ etcetera resulted thereby
The first inhabitants of Wanaque were the Lenape. The Lenapes lived on what is now the south side of town, and they traded with the Dutch. In 1675, the English took over New Netherland and made Wanaque part of their colony. The English burned down most of the Lenape village in 1676, but some survived and moved to a new location on the north side of town. The English renamed this place Morristown after Mount Morris, in honor of their sponsor. In 1764, when New Jersey became a state, Morristown was made its capital.
