The history of gun lights in Wanaque, New Jersey can be traced back to at least 1886. At that time, the area was home to a small community called West Orange. The town was founded by Dutch immigrants and its original name was "Wananque". In 1892, the town was renamed after General James G. Harlan, who served as the 10th Governor of New Jersey from 1895-1896. It wasn't until 1902 that Wanaque became an incorporated city. In 1909, the first fire department in Wanaque was established and it remained operational until 1951. Throughout its years of operation, the fire department helped support a variety of local activities such as dances and fairs. One of the most significant moments in the history of the department occurred on November 7th, 1951 when it responded to a mass shooting at a school in Parsippany Township. During the incident, four people were killed and thirteen were injured including six firefighters. To this day, Wednesday is named in honor of those killed and injured during that fateful night.

Wanaque is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,934 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Lenape word "wanequah", meaning “to cross over” or “to pass through.” Wanaque was formed by joining two previously separate towns, Weston and East Orange. The town was founded in 1824 as a result of the General Land Office's efforts to consolidate land grants from various proprietors in the area. On July 1, 1825, it became a part of Union Township. In 1874, it annexes parts of North Brunswick and South Brunswick Township to form another larger municipality called Weston-Easton Township. On January 1, 1984, Wanaque became an independent township again with its own government and schools system. Wanaque is located at (40°39′28″N 73°55′42″E). It has an elevation of 677 feet (207 m). According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census on 2000,[1] there were 7,898 people resident in Wanaque township who were eligible to vote. Of these registered voters, 69% voted – including 58% for Democrat Tom Corbett and 32% for Republican Chris Christie - making Wanaque one of the most Democratic townships in New Jersey . As well as being one of only four majority black communities in Hunterdon County (the others are East Newark/Hackensack & Sayreville), Wanaque also had one African American mayor - Rufus King - until his death on November 3rd 2005

For example, its citizens could vote freely and hold office without fear of retribution from the Township Council. Additionally, Wanaques municipals managed all aspects of their own economy with complete autonomy which allowed them to develop a strong sense of self-reliance while still keeping close ties with their surrounding communities. This type of arrangement eventually led to the growth of Wanaque into what it is today - one of America's most vibrant rural Communities
