Wanaque is part of the Camden-Atlantic City metropolitan area and is located on the Atlantic Ocean's eastern outskirts. It began as a small Indian settlement in 1799 and became an incorporated town on March 3, 1838. Wanaque was among the communities that were destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The men who founded Wanaque were: Jonathan Wanamaker (1799-1878), Solomon Wanamaker (1801-1876) and Abraham Wanamaker (1802-1872). The first post office opened in 1838 with four initial residents - Jonathan Wanamaker, Solomon Wanamaker, Abram Wanamaker and John Doherty - serving as directors while also opening up stores within town limits selling goods such as groceries and notions to help support local businesses. By 1860 there were twenty five businesses operating within town limits with over one hundred employees including sixty two males and forty seven females; this number has grown since then to over two hundred fifty current or former employees currently working at various businesses throughout the city today reflecting its rapidly growing economy along with its strong community spirit which has contributed to its nickname "the City That Never Sleeps". During World War II when production increased for munitions plants across Pennsylvania due to shortages caused by wartime rationing, many workers relocated to Wanaque including sixteen women who worked at Pascagoula munitions plant prior to moving into jobs at nearby Haddon Heights munitions plant following their induction into military service on December 10th 1941; these women are known collectively as "The Haddon Heights Girls". Wanaque was a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States until the early 21st century. It is now part of Union City. Wanaque was first settled by Dutch and English colonists in 1678 as a result of the Mayflower Compact. The town's name comes from an Algonquian word meaning "place where the water is clear". In 1839, Wanaque became the first township in Middlesex County to be created from part of Rahway Township. In 1847, Wanaque became one of two townships within Middlesex County to be established from portions of Elizabethtown Township. On July 1, 1874, all but 2 percent of Wanaque's population moved to Union City due to low land values and a lack of available housing. The post office at Wanaque was established on January 3, 1795 under the name North Woolwich; it changed its name to Wanaque on October 4th that year. As part of a wave of consolidation throughout New Jersey during the 1800s, most local government functions were consolidated with those of neighboring townships or villages; however, Newark remained separate municipality until 1913 when it merged into Newark and Bergen Counties. On November 15th 1917 referendum voters approved incorporation as a city by vote rate almost 50% over against no votes cast (1%). The incorporation process took three years with $2 million in funding raised through issues such as liquor sales and parking meters; however Mayor James J. McGowan vetoed all annexation petitions because he believed that city government should be kept separate from township government services which would make his job more difficult should they become necessary for both entities under one roof. On December 11th 1920 election McGowan was re-elected mayor with 63% majority against only 2 candidates running for office (the other being Samuel Dolan who ran unsuccessfully for another term). After six terms as mayor McGowan retired at age 75 on January 1st 1933 after serving 47 years without interruption – making him NJ’s oldest mayor ever at age 78 years old at the time he announced his retirement and just two days younger than then-Senator Frank Lautenberg who also announced his retirement age at 77 years old four months later becoming NJ’s oldest senator ever at 78 years old on February 9th 1933 having served 33 total years since taking office despite never holding any statewide elected office). His son James J. McGowan Jr., continued his father’s policy while James J.'s son John Fenton assumed leadership roles starting in 1936 until 1945 when Fenton succeeded him leaving behind an unbroken succession plan that has resulted in current Mayor Joseph Aiello being elected mayors every year since 1975 even though he has held no statewide elected office.)
