Wallington is a town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. Wallington is the largest community in Union County and one of its two towns. It is located on the border of Middlesex and Sussex counties. The first Europeans to visit Wallington were Dutch traders in 1664 who named it "Wallington". The name may be derived from Indian word "walla" meaning 'a small stream'. In 1795, Captain John Stevens established a public wharf here as part of his plan to travel through New Jersey and explore the area. He called this point "New Amsterdam", but renamed it Wallington after himself and his friend Colonel Jameson. In 1830, local farmer Nicholas D’Angelo built a small gristmill on the South Branch of the Raritan River about four miles east of present-day Wallington. After years of operation, D’Angelo sold his mill to Jethro Gibbs in 1857 for $1,000 cash. At that time there was only one road into or out of Wallington – an old dirt path which led from Princeton Junction westward across Sussex County to Bordentown via North Brunswick Township and then south through East Brunswick Township to get to Newark City Center. The new road was built by Governor Andrew Johnson in 1867 and became State Routes 912 and 120 (later Interstate 95). In 1927, when New Jersey converted from a rural commonwealth into a true state, all township boundaries were changed except for those within each county (thus creating two townships – Middlesex Boroughs 2nd Ward & 3rd Ward within Atlantic County while Sussex Boroughs 1st Ward & 2nd wards within Burlington County). In 1970–71, land adjacent to what is now Route 912 northbound were donated by Morris Kappenberger so that he could be buried there with his wife Clara; they are now buried at Valley View Cemetery next door to their son Moses Kappenberger Jr., uncle Morris Kappenberger Sr., aunt Clara Atherton Kappenberger (heir apparent), nephew Julius Abramowitz (Kappenberg cousins), siblings Anna Elisabeth Appelbaum (wife of city solicitor Solomon Perlmutter)and Nellie Lillian Appelbaum; sister-in-law Alice Goldberg; niece Gertrude Morgenthau Dailey; grandniece Liesl Bierstadt Morton both living in Manhattan Beach California since 1982 According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of , all land

Wallington was one of the most important towns in Bucks County, New Jersey. It was founded in 1764 by Colonel John Wallington and his family. The town developed into a large commercial and political center during the Revolutionary War. In 1814, Wallington was renamed to honor General George Washington. The town experienced significant economic growth during the 19th century, and its population reached over 10,000 by 1900. However, during the 20th century, Wallington's economy declined as jobs moved away from the areas around it. Today, only a few hundred people live in Wallington proper; its remaining buildings are used for storage or for recreational purposes.
After the Revolutionary War, Wallington became a small town in Hunterdon County. It was incorporated as a borough on April 15, 1868. The first mayor was Cincinnatus Kapp and the first vice president was Hosea Fowler. In 1870, Wallington received its own post office which continued to be called Wallington until it was discontinued on June 14, 1907. On May 29, 1928, Wallington voters passed an ordinance designating May Day as a national holiday in commemoration of the American Revolution and for other patriotic reasons. Wallington has experienced significant growth over the years due to its location close to New York City and other major metropolitan areas. In 2006, it had a population of 16,821 residents and is now one of Hunterdon County's most populous municipalities.
