Wallington, NJ, is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 15,711 at the 2010 census. Wallington's history dates back to 1853 when it was part of Middlesex County. In 1881, Wallington became a township in Morris County and in 1912 it became a city. The first scopes erected in Wallington were three 10-inch telescopes donated by Samuel Morse and his son Robert Morse to the University of Pennsylvania on November 12th, 1852. These telescopes were used for research astronomy and were much admired by scientists of the time. In 1865, General George Armstrong Custer died at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument near Walhalla NY and is buried there with full military honors next to General Philip Sheridan. This event has been commemorated annually by erecting a small plaque at the monument honoring Custer’s memory and Wyoming State Road 526 which leads from Walhalla NY eastward to Battle Creek MI (now US 24) where Custer’s camp was located has also been designated as “Custer Highway” in Memory of General George Armstrong Custer

The town grew rapidly after it was established as an agricultural community by Members of the First Continental Congress in 1814. In 1835, Wallington became a township within Morris County. The township's boundaries were redefined in 1889 when it merged with neighboring Harveysville Township to form Wallington-Harvey Township. In 1944, Wallington-Harvey Township became part of Middlesex Borough and then finally Middlesex County in 1970. However, because most humans only experienced about two centuries of human development within their current borders (the rest being suburban or rural areas), there is no definitive record indicating when or how many settlements/townships existed within Middlesex County before 1870s; however some evidence suggests that there may have been as many as six such townships although this number is uncertain due to lack of documentary evidence. The first person to reside in what is now WallINGTON was George Wallaceon who came over from Maryland around 1800 according to his diary entry dated October 10th 1800 which stated: "I landed at Gravesend on Thursday last and landed at one o’clock this morning". He founded what would eventually become known asWallINGTON on October 10th 1800 during America's independence war effort just south of Philadelphia Landing where he set up camp along with other Virginians including James Ketchum(of Ketchum Mills) from Cumberland County which also happened to be present for that day's events leading up to independence day relief efforts across Delaware Bayou - later called Philly Landing today - himself playing an important role alongside his friends John Dickinson(of Philadelphia) and Robert Morris(of Camden). At least one source claims that George Wallaceon actually set foot on American soil for the very first time while living close enough to Philadelphia Landing for all those activities taking place! wallington@ix9nei.com
