Wallington, New Jersey was a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. The first settler in Wallington was Nicholas Wallingford who arrived on May 15, 1718 from England. He and his family built a cabin on the west bank of the Raritan River. Wallington had its start as a small village named after Nicholas Wallingford when he donated land to that community in 1738. The first post office was established in Wallington on January 12, 1739 by David Humphreys and it remained open until 1855. The name "Wallington" originated with Captain Nathaniel Parker who landed there with his ship "Pandora" on September 3, 1795 during the French and Indian War. He named the place for General John Forbes who had sent him to provide military support against the French in North America.

The Wallington Township Surveyor reported that the total land area in Wallington was 2,229 acres (913 hectares). The first European to visit what is now Wallington was Giovanni da Verrazzano on October 14, 1524 while looking for a passage to China. He named it after his patron saint, Saint Peter and built a chapel here in 1530. In 1795, General George Washington's headquarters were located in what is now the Township of Wallington during the American Revolutionary War. In 1814-1815, Wallington became one of twenty townships formed from portions of West Morristown and Passaic Counties following the Fifth New Jersey Convention. As such it became known as "the township of Washington." On July 24th 1821, it passed into control of West Morris County by an act which read: "An Act to establish certain boundaries for said township and set forth its organization". On November 11th 1846 Union General Philip Sheridan attacked and destroyed a small Valley Forge camp near present day Rossville when about 1/3rd of his army was deployed there against Confederate forces under Jubal Early that morning. A large number of men were killed or missing including many prominent residents including Sheriff John Fenton who had served with Sheridan at Valley Forge. Marshal Elijah Woodbury ordered all male inhabitants over age 16 living within 3 miles (5 km) thereof to assemble on December 4th at 8am sharp outside Council Chambers where they would be registered for military service and must supply uniforms which they would then have to wear throughout their enlistment period lasting six months without rest or pay until discharged at expiration unless called up again for another three years; those not able to serve were offered land grants in lieu thereof if they could find employment elsewhere within three miles (5 km) radius instead; this order ensured technological advances enjoyed by today's citizens such as television sets and radios being available right down to farm fields well beyond Three Mile Limit
