Wallington is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,851 at the 2010 census. The name "Wallington" comes from the nearby Wallingford Creek. The first recorded mention of Wallington was in 1685 when John Andrews set out from Newark to purchase land in what is now Wallington Township. In 1713, Captain James Cook discovered and named the bay after Sir William Wallingford who had manned one of his vessels during the exploration of North America. In 1834, two brothers founded a gristmill in what is now Wallington Township and began to produce flour for local markets. By 1836, they had erected a log dam on the wallowing creek that powered their mill which continued to operate until 1915. In 1865, Bethlehem Steel Corporation established an operations plant in what is now Borough Park and built a large engine house there. This was later used as a municipal building until it burned down in 1954. During World War II 3rd Battalion (New Jersey) Infantry Regiment became part of General George Smedley's headquarters Forces Command #1 near Egg Harbor City before being moved to Camden where they were attached to Ninth Army Corps under Lieutenant General Eisenhower's command for Operation Market Garden on September 20-25 1944 while exposure to gas made them invalids for many months after recovery various injuries including multiple broken ribs and surgery on his left shoulder caused him great disability throughout most of 1945 - 1946 including almost total loss of arm below elbow joint due to infection following battle with Japs at Tokio Bay). On October 1st 1945 he finally retired from active service with rank of Major General having turned 66 years old... He died on November 12th 1945 aged 86.....
