Pepper spray became officially recognized as an effective means of self-defense in 1961 when it was added to the United States Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).

Wallington, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,711 at the 2010 census. The name "Wallington" is derived from the Dutch word weiland (farmstead), and refers to a small creek that flows through the town. Wallington is located on the southern border of Middlesex County and is bordered by Hackettstown to the north and South Hackettstown to the east. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Wallington were French settlers who arrived in 1664. They named their settlement after Pierre-Jean de Wallon, an officer with France's army during the American Revolution. In 1784, English settlers moved into what became Wallington from nearby Princeton Township. By 1800, there were about 100 people living in Wallington. In 1814, when Middlesex County was formed from portions of Somerset and Bergen counties, Wallington became part of it. The first store opened in what is now downtown Wallinton in 1815 and soon afterwards began housing a growing number of farmers and boatmen who used the creek for transportation across county lines. By 1830, there were 10 stores and 1000 residents living in what are now central business districts of both towns: near Broadway Street (now called Cherry Hill Avenue) lies Union Bank; on Cherry Hill Road between Maple Drive and Park Place stands Mechanics' Institute; just west of University Avenue along Route 33 stands Baptist Church; one block south on Route 202 stands Royal Dutch Shell gas station; east of Interstate 95 lies Court House Square which served as a local jail until 1892 when it reopened as an academy for girls before becoming an adult daycare center today known as First Lady Academy Incorporated During World War II most residents either worked at military bases or did skilled labor at munitions plants within commuting distance or they took up farming or other rural pursuits outside of town limits which would later be impacted by wartime efforts including extensive land acquisition for military purposes such as armament development sites etc.. Withdrawal from war left many people without jobs opportunities starting around 1946 so some returned home while others established themselves elsewhere eventually leading to current day suburban development around downtown area with continuing heavy military presence also contributing to increased commercial activity especially near I-95 corridor dating back more than 50 years
